Burgess and Tubergen named MIAA co-Players of the Week

GRAND RAPIDS MI B Calvin College seniors Nate Burgess and Josh Tubergen
have been named MIAA co-Players of the Week in men's basketball. Both
players are receiving the honor for the first time.

A native of Byron Center and a graduate of South Christian High School,
Burgess was instrumental in leading Calvin to its second consecutive
MIAA Tournament championship this past weekend as his defensive play
sparked the Knights to victories over Olivet and Adrian. In a 91-74
victory over Olivet in the MIAA Tournament semifinals, Burgess collected
nine points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals in 27 minutes of
action. In a 77-63 win over Adrian in the MIAA Tournament finals
Saturday night, Burgess was credited with nine points, eight rebounds,
four assists and one steal in 33 minutes of playing time. Over the
course of the weekend, Burgess was 7-of-15 from the floor, 1-of-4 from
three-point range and 3-of-3 at the free throw line.

A 5-11 shooting guard, Burgess is averaging 9.0 points and 3.9 rebounds
a game. He also has a team-high 77 assists against just 25 turnovers.
Over the last two years, Burgess has 133 assists against just 47
turnovers for an assist-to-turnover ratio of nearly 3-to-1.

Tubergen hails from Zeeland and is a graduate of Holland Christian High
School. A 6-7 center, Tubergen was also instrumental in Calvin's march
to the MIAA Tournament title this weekend as he scored 28 points and
grabbed 12 rebounds. In Friday's win over Olivet, Tubergen scored 15
points, grabbed eight rebounds, blocked two shots and picked up two
steals. He then collected 13 points, four rebounds and two steals in
    Saturday's win over Adrian.

Tubergen is averaging 10.2 points and 6.3 rebounds a game while
connecting on 54.5 percent of his field goal attempts. He also leads
the Knights in blocked shots with 40 blocks on the year.

In winning Saturday's MIAA Tournament title, Calvin advances to the
NCAA III Tournament for the second straight year and for the 13th time
in school history. The NCAA III Tournament pairings will be announced
this evening with first round play scheduled to begin March 1. The
defending NCAA III national champion, Calvin will bring a 22-4 record
and a seven-game win streak into NCAA III Tournament play.
