MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
The Calvin men's and women's track and field teams came up with a pair of strong efforts at an indoor invitational hosted by Ohio Northern Friday night.
In the men's competition, Calvin took third in a 10-team field with 74 points while the Calvin women took second in a seven-team field with 116 points.
In the women's competition, junior Lindsay Mulder (Calvin Christian) continued her sparkling indoor campaign as uncorked a leap of 19 1 ¼ to win the long jump. A two-time All-American in the event, Mulder cracked the 19-foot barrier for the first time in her collegiate career Friday night.
Mulder's long jump performance was one of eight first place performances by the Calvin women Friday. The Calvin women swept the three relay events, winning the 4 x 400 meter relay in 3:58.67; the 4 X 200 meter relay in 1:47.63 and the distance medley relay in 13:23.24. Calvin's 4 X 400 meter relay team was comprised of junior Mindy Worst (Grand Rapids Christian), sophomore Molly Delcamp (Columbus, OH), Mulder and Pierce. Calvin's 4 x 200 meter relay was composed of Worst, freshman Jill Baker (Strathroy, ON), Mulder and Pierce. Calvin's distance medley relay team was made up of freshman Tracey Diephuis (Grand Rapids Christian), Delcamp, freshman Leah Cornell (Pennfield, NY) and sophomore Brooke Wierenga (Caledonia).
Individually, junior Rachel Veltkamp (Grand Rapids Christian) also had a career-best evening as she took first place in the pole vault with a school-record vault of 11-8. Veltkamp's top performance in the pole vault heading into the 2001 season had been 10-11 ¾.
Other individual winners for the Calvin women included senior Megan Pierce (Fort Wayne, IN) in the 400 meters (58.23); sophomore Lydia Boonstra (Escondido, CA) in the triple jump (33-10 ¾) and junior Lindsay Carrier (Tri-unity Christian) in the 5,000 meters (18:52.32). Carrier was part of a 1-2 Calvin finish in the 5,000 meters as freshman Jessie Lair (West Bloomfield) took second in 19:13.14.
On the men's side, Calvin took first place in three events with seniors Mark DeWeerd (Unity Christian) and Paul Petersen (Crawfordsville, IN) leading the way. DeWeerd took first place in the pole vault (16-0) while Petersen led a 1-2-3-4 Calvin finish in the 5,000 meters with a first place time of 15:19.72. Petersen was followed by junior Cameron Harrison (Colorado Springs, CO) who was second (15:28.30); freshman Tim Avery (Rochester, NY) who was third (15:31.72) and sophomore Brian Paff (National City, CA) who was fourth (15:36.15).
Calvin's distance medley relay team also took first place with a time of 10:37.19. Other highlights included a second place finish by Calvin's 4 x 400 meter relay team (3:24.59); a third place finish by senior Eric Hansen (Big Rapids) in the 400 meters (50.77) and a fourth place finish by junior Jason DeVries (Unity Christian) in the pole vault (14-6). Calvin's 4 X 400 meter relay team was made up of Hansen, sophomore Steve Abbring (Highland, IN), junior Keith VanGoor (Midland Park, NJ) and senior Phil Sikkenga (Wheaton, IL). Calvin's distance medley relay team was made up of Sikkenga, senior Kevin VerBeek (Lansing, IL), junior Peter Armstrong (Lacey, WA) and senior Jerry Cullum (Muskegon).
Both Calvin teams will now break until March 17 when they compete at the Springtime Invitational hosted by Auburn University.
WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
Calvin will send four swimmers to the NCAA III Women's Swimming and Diving Championships March 8-10 in Buffalo, New York.
Representing Calvin will be juniors Erin Kloostra (Grand Rapids Christian), Kate Conrad (Calvin Christian) and sophomores Anne Kuiper (Houghton) and Katie Nagelkirk (Holland Christian).
Kloostra and Nagelkirk will swim in the 50 and 100 freestyle events and will join Conrad and Kuiper in the 200 freestyle relay, 400 freestyle relay, 800 freestyle relay and 200 medley relay.
Nagelkirk is seeded 20th in the 50 freestyle (24.45) and 24th in the 100 freestyle (53.47). Kloostra is seeded 35th in the 50 freestyle (24.68).
Calvin's 200 freestyle relay is seeded ninth (1:37.43); its 400 freestyle relay team seeded seventh (3:34.39) and its 800 freestyle relay team seeded 18th (7:57.98). In addition, Calvin's 200 medley relay team is seeded 15th (1:51.37).
A year ago, Calvin finished 36th at the NCAA III Championships with 10 points.
Kloostra and Conrad are making their third trip to the NCAA III Championships while Kuiper and Nagelkirk are headed to the NCAA meet for the second straight year.
