MEN'S BASKETBALL
ADRIAN -- Calvin scored 14 unanswered points to open the second half to
pull away for an 85-60 victory at Adrian Saturday afternoon.
With the win, Calvin moves into a share of first place in the MIAA
standings with Hope as the Knights are now 3-0 in the MIAA and 12-2
overall.
Adrian held the advantage for most of the first half, leading by as many
as eight points at 22-14 with 9:10 left but the Knights used a 16-6 run
capped off by a basket by junior Jon Potvin (Gladstone) to pull ahead
30-28 with 1:06 left in the half. Adrian converted a field goal in the
final second of the half to tie the score at 32-32.
Calvin then roared out the gates in the second half with a 14-0 run with
sophomore Jeremy Veenstra (Kalamazoo Christian) scoring nine of Calvin's
points in the scoring spurt, allowing the Knights to build a 46-32 lead.
Calvin would maintain a double-digit lead the rest of the way to collect
the win.
Veenstra led the Calvin attack with 23 points on 10-of-18 shooting while
also picking up eight rebounds, six assists and one steal in 26 minutes
of action. Sophomore Bryan Foltice (Tri-unity Christian) overcame first
half foul trouble to finish with 14 points while senior Josh Tubergen
(Holland Christian) had another fine game off the bench with 12 points,
eight rebounds and two blocked shots. Seniors Derek Kleinheksel
(Hamilton) and Brian Krosschell (Grand Rapids Christian) also had big
games in the post for the Knights as Kleinheksel registered nine points
and seven rebounds off the bench while Krosschell had six points and a
game-high 13 rebounds.
Calvin finished with a 56-36 rebounding advantage.
Adrian was led in scoring by sophomore Dan Walter who put up 18 points
while junior Steve Herron had 15 points and senior Mike Lagger 11 points
and 10 rebounds.
Calvin finished with a 47.1 percent field goal clip (33-of-70) including
55.6 percent in the second half. The Knights also shot 75.0 percent
(15-of-20) from the free throw line, marking just the third time this
year that Calvin has shot better than 70 percent from the stripe.
Adrian shot just 30.9 percent overall (21-of-68) including 28.6 percent
in the second half. The Bulldogs (8-6 overall, 1-3 MIAA) were 15-of-21
(.714) from the free throw line but just 3-of-22 (.136) from three-point
range.
Calvin will now prepare for a big two-game homestand as the Knights host
Albion Wednesday at 7:30 pm and rival Hope next Saturday at 3:00 pm.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Calvin once again came up with a sparkling defensive effort as the
Knights handed visiting Adrian a 71-50 defeat at the Calvin Fieldhouse
Saturday afternoon. On Wednesday night, Calvin held St. Mary's to 18
percent field goal shooting. On Saturday, Calvin held Adrian to 28.6
percent field goal shooting including just 25.0 percent in the second
half when the Knights pulled away to a double-digit lead. At 3-1 in the
MIAA, Calvin now stands alone in third place in the MIAA standings
behind league-leading Alma (4-0) and Hope (4-0).
Adrian (6-7 overall, 1-3 MIAA) held the lead for a good portion of the
first half, leading by five points at 18-13 with 5:52 left in the half
but the Knights outscored the Bulldogs 16-7 over the final 5:36 of the
half to go up 29-25 at halftime.
Adrian closed to within three at 29-26 on a free throw by sophomore Lisa
Butts in the opening minute of the second half before Calvin (8-6
overall, 3-1 MIAA) churned out a 17-2 scoring run to build a 46-28 lead
with 11:54 to play. Calvin forced the Bulldogs into seven turnovers in
the crucial scoring run with the Knights converting 7 of 11 field goal
attempts in the stretch.
Adrian would get no closer than 13 points the rest of the way as the
Knights moved on for the win.
Sophomore forward Emily Mejeur (Kalamazoo Christian) continued her
strong conference play with a career-high 18 points including four
three-point field goals. Sophomore Tricia Dyk (Western Michigan
Christian) also turned in a superb effort as she came up with a
career-high 13 points while also dishing out six assists, collecting
four steals, three rebounds and one blocked shot. Junior Kris Bohlman
(Madison, WI) also had a big afternoon with nine points, three assists,
three rebounds and a steal off the bench. In addition, sophomore Emily
Beard (Southfield Christian) had eight points, four rebounds and four
blocked shots in a reserve role while sophomore Mandy VanDenBosch had
four points and a game-high nine rebounds.
Adrian was led by sophomore Sarah Vincke who tallied 15 points while
sophomore Allison Keebaugh had 11.
Calvin shot 46.0 percent (23-of-50) overall and converted 20-of-30
attempts from the free throw line including 18-of-24 in the second half.
Calvin held a 41-39 rebounding advantage. Calvin finished with 24
turnovers with Adrian turning it over 23 times. The difference came in
the second half as the Knights turned the ball over just six times while
the Bulldogs committed 13 second half turnovers.
Calvin returns to action Wednesday night when it travels to Albion for a
7:30 pm contest. The Knights will then journey to rival Hope next
Saturday for a 3:00 pm contest.
