WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Calvin captured a defensive battle at St. Mary's Wednesday night,
defeating the Belles 52-35 to climb above the .500 mark for the second
time in the last week. The victory bumps Calvin's record to 7-6 overall
and to 2-1 in the MIAA.
Calvin led 22-16 at halftime and continued to extend its lead in the
second half as the Knights limited the Belles to 15 percent field goal
shooting over the final 20 minutes. Calvin shot just 36.5 percent
overall (19-of-52) but held St. Mary's to 18.2 percent (10-of-55) field
goal shooting overall.
Junior Kendra Toonstra of Calvin Christian High School led the scoring
attack for the Knights with 11 points while sophomore Emily Beard
(Southfield Christian) collected her second double-double of the year
with 10 points and a career-high 13 rebounds. Freshman Kim Wolthuis
(South Christian) chipped in with eight points, three rebounds and two
steals.
St. Mary's (7-5 overall, 1-2 MIAA) was led in scoring by Kristen Matha
who finished with eight points.
Calvin also came up with its best ball-handling performance of the
season as the Knights finished the game with 17 turnovers, marking the
first time this year that they had finished with under 20 turnovers in a
game.
Calvin returns to action Saturday when it hosts Adrian at 3:00 pm at the
Calvin Fieldhouse.
