MEN'S BASKETBALL

WOOSTER, OH - Calvin bounced back from a disappointing Friday night
loss to Chicago with an 84-60 victory over Case Western Reserve in the
consolation game of the Wooster Mose Hole Classic Saturday evening.

With the win, Calvin will head into the MIAA season with a 9-2 record.
The Knights open defense of their MIAA title Wednesday night at Olivet
in a game scheduled to begin at 7:30 pm.

Calvin blew the game open with a 15-4 run midway through the first half,
allowing the Knights to build a 34-18 edge with 6:59 left in the half.
Calvin would take a 47-29 halftime lead and would stretch its lead to as
many as 27 points in the second half to cruise to the win.

"I told our guys this morning that I was a little crabby about last
night's loss and that we had a chance to set things straight today,"
said Calvin basketball coach Kevin Vande Streek with a grin afterward.
"We came out with good mental toughness from the outset which I was
happy to see. This was a good way to bounce back from last night's
loss."

Calvin placed four players in double-figures in scoring led by sophomore
Jeremy Veenstra (Kalamazoo Christian) who chalked up 14 points on
7-of-10 shooting from the field. Sophomore Bryan Foltice (Tri-unity
Christian) was next with 13 points while also chalking up three assists
and three steals. Senior Nate Burgess (South Christian) also came up
with a stellar effort as he produced 11 points and a career-high nine
assists to land a spot on the all-tournament team. Freshman Chris Prins
(Escondido, CA) also had 11 points along with a pair of steals. In
addition, senior Derek Kleinheksel (Hamilton) and junior Jon Potvin
(Gladstone) chipped in with eight points each off the bench while senior
Brian Krosschell (Grand Rapids Christian) had seven points and a
game-high 10 rebounds.goblue

Case Western Reserve (3-4) was led by John Link and Josh Davis who
popped in 16 points apiece. Senior Kevin Von Handorf added 14 points,
with all of his points coming in the first half as the Knights held the
bulky 6-7 center scoreless in the second half.

Vande Streek was pleased with the entire team performance but cited the
play of Burgess in particular. "Nate Burgess is a complete player in
all facets of the game," said Vande Streek. "He does so many things
well that go often go unnoticed. He had an outstanding weekend for our
team."

Calvin finished with a 52.2 percent field goal clip including 55.6
percent in the first half. The Knights shot 44.4 percent from
three-point range, connecting on 8-of-18 three-point attempts.
Defensively, Calvin held the Spartans to 36.8 percent field goal
shooting while also holding a 44-36 rebounding edge.
