    MEN'S SOCCER

Calvin senior Jason DeJonge saved his best game for his last as the
Western Michigan Christian High School graduate notched a hat-trick to
lead the Knights to a 3-2 victory over rival Hope Saturday afternoon at
Calvin Field. The victory allowed Calvin to secure its 30th winning
season in the last 32 years as the Knights closed out the year with a
    10-9-1 overall record.

Saturday's game marked the final contest in a Calvin uniform for DeJonge
and seniors Brian Douma and Marcus Byeman of Redmond, Washington and Jon
VerMerris of Western Michigan Christian High School. All four seniors
came up with stellar efforts for Calvin in the win.

DeJonge opened the scoring in the 8th minute as he took a cross from
sophomore Charles Telep (Sewickley, PA) and slammed a shot into the back
of the net. Less than six minutes later, DeJonge gave the Knights a 2-0
lead as Byeman broke free up the right wing and slid a well-placed feed
past a charging Hope goaltender that DeJonge was able to tap into an
empty net. The assist was the seventh of the year for Byeman who
finished in a tie for the MIAA lead in assists. Calvin's offensive
attack in the opening moments was keyed by quick one-touch passing and
several furious rushes up the field by junior midfielder Joel Tlachac
    (Grand Haven).

Hope came back to turn the tables over the final 25 minutes of the first
half however with a pair of goals set up by freshman Ed Heubner. Heuber
set up the first Hope goal in the 21st minute as he redirected a loose
ball that Andrew Riker was able to rip into the net. Heubner then
picked up his second assist of the game as he sent a chip to the far
right post that Hope junior Charlie Matz was able to head into the back
of the net with just 3:10 left in the half.

The contest remained tied until the 66th minute when Calvin scored on a
chip-play of its own. The play began when Telep broke free up the
middle and while being shadowed to the left wing, sent a chip to the
right post that DeJonge was able to collect in a battle for the ball
with Hope's goaltender. DeJonge then scooted a shot while lying on the
ground into the right hand corner of the net to give the Knights a 3-2
    advantage.

Calvin then held the lead the rest of the way with sophomore goaltender
Justin Bouw (Unity Christian) coming up with several clutch saves down
the stretch for the Knights. Bouw finished the game with five saves -
all coming in the second half while junior Matt Thelen (Grand Haven)
came up with three saves for the Knights in the first half. Hope
goaltender Marcus Voss had five saves in defeat. Hope (11-8-1 overall,
    8-4-0 MIAA) outshot Calvin 10-9.

DeJonge finished the year with 21 goals including an MIAA-leading 13 in
    conference games.

Calvin closed out the year 7-4-1 in the MIAA, good for a fourth place
league finish. Since the MIAA began men's soccer in 1970, Calvin has
recorded a won-loss record of 239-62-29 for a winning percentage of
    .768.

    VOLLEYBALL

A gutty gritty effort was not enough to lift Calvin to victory in
Saturday night's MIAA Tournament championship final as the Knights fell
to rival Hope 15-9, 17-15, 14-16, 16-14 at Hope's Dow Center. With the
victory, Hope advances (30-7) to the NCAA III Tournament while Calvin
closes out its season at 27-8. Calvin held a lead in all four games but
struggled to close out each game. Calvin took a 4-1 lead in game one
only to lose all-conference setter Sara Ahrenholz (Prinsburg, MN) for
the rest of the evening at that point with a sprained ankle. Freshman
setter Deb Frieswyk (Holland Christian) replaced Ahrenholz in the lineup
and came up with an admirable performance in the first varsity action of
    her collegiate career.

After dropping game one 15-9, Calvin moved out to an 11-5 lead in game
two. Calvin then led 13-10 and had chances to win at 14-13 and 15-14
but could not close as the Flying Dutch used a 3-0 run to win 17-15 and
take a 2-0 lead in games. The Knights fought off elimination, wining
game three in hard-fought fashion. Calvin moved out to a 12-7 lead only
to see Hope tie the score at 12-12. Calvin scored the next two points
to go up 14-12 but again could not close out the match. With the score
tied 14-13, Calvin had five service opportunities to close but could not
finish off the Flying Dutch as Hope tied the score at 14-14. Calvin
then dug down and came up with the final two points to win 16-14.

In game four, Calvin appeared ready to stretch Hope to a five-game match
as the Knights led 14-10 behind three consecutive service aces by
sophomore Jessica Huisjen (Lansing) off the bench. Again Calvin could
not close out the game as the Flying Dutch scored six unanswered points
to take the game, match and tournament.

Seniors Ann Wiersma (Vista, CA), Rhonda Volkers (Holland Christian) and
Alicia DeGroot (Tulare, CA) were all superb in defeat with Wiersma
coming up with a match-high 26 kills along with eight digs. Wiersma
finished the evening with a sizzling .373 attack percentage. Volkers
was also huge as she came up with 19 kills, 13 digs, three blocks and
one service ace while DeGroot tallied 14 digs and two service aces. In
addition, sophomore Melissa Pell (Fremont) recorded 10 kills and three
blocks while sophomore Cassie Christopher (Fruitport) had seven kills
and freshman Tricia Balkema (Highland, IN) had eight kills and nine
    digs.

Frieswyk was perhaps the biggest unsung hero of the evening for Calvin
however as she shook off early-match nerves to collect 48 assists, 14
digs, four kills and a clutch ace in game four that helped the Knights
    build their 14-10 lead.

Hope was led by Laura Hahnfeld and Martha Luidens as Hahnfeld came up
with 23 kills and Luidens 22 kills. Senior setter Kim Grotenhuis also
chalked up 56 assists with freshman Laura Geurink recording four service
    aces.

    MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SWIMMING

Both Calvin swim teams moved to 2-0 on the year and to 1-0 in the MIAA
with victories over Albion Saturday afternoon at Albion's Kresge
Natatorium. In the women's competition, Calvin recorded a 124-113
victory while the Calvin men defeated Albion 148-78.

The Calvin women picked up seven individual victories and one relay
triumph in Saturday's meet. Individual winners included sophomore Jenny
Los (Holland Christian) in the 1,000 freestyle (11:26.60); sophomore Ann
    Kuiper (Houghton) in the 200 freestyle (2:05.52) and 200 IM (2:15.44);
junior Liz Alsover (Forest Hills Central) in the 100 butterfly
(1:05.92); sophomore Kate Conrad (Calvin Christian) in the 100 freestyle
(57.36); sophomore Katie Nagelkirk (Holland Christian) in the 100
backstroke (1:03.85) and sophomore Ginni Bakker (Kalamazoo Christian) in
the 500 freestyle (5:33.11). Calvin's 200 medley relay team of
sophomore Megan Bagnall (Elgin, IL), sophomore Alison Gliesman (Macomb),
sophomore Rachel Hyde (Rockford) and Conrad took first place with a time
    of 2:01.18.

In the men's dual meet, Calvin won the 200 medley relay along with six
individual first place performances. Individual Calvin winners included
junior Chris Veltman (Duarte, CA) in the 200 freestyle (1:51.67) and 500
freestyle (5:04.08); sophomore Ryan Johnson (Grand Haven) in the 100
backstroke (57.23); sophomore Brian Koster (Grand Rapids Christian) on
the three-meter (184.95) and one-meter (179.25) diving board along with
sophomore A.J. Penninga (Grand Rapids Christian) in the 200 IM
    (2:06.04).

In addition, Calvin's 200 medley relay team of sophomore Jake VanderPlas
(Palo Alto, CA), freshman Mike Dallas (Rockford), freshman Brad White
(Dayton, OH) and Penninga took first place with a time of 1:41.94.

Both Calvin teams return to action next Saturday when they compete in
    dual meets at Wheaton (IL).
