    WOMEN'S SOCCER

    Calvin concluded its 2000 season with a 3-1 victory over Alma Saturday
    afternoon at Calvin Field. The victory allowed the Knights to close out
    the season 11-7 overall and in third place in the final MIAA standings
    at 10-4 in conference play. In addition, Calvin will carry a five-game
    win streak into its 2001 campaign.

    Calvin scored the first three goals of the game and held control
    throughout as the Knights outshot Alma (6-10-1 overall, 4-9-1 MIAA)
    38-7. Alma scored its lone goal with just 4:36 left in regulation.
    Calvin junior Larissa Onderlinde (Kalamazoo Christian opened the scoring
    in the 22nd minute as she took a deflected pass from sophomore Tricia
    Dyk (Western Michigan) and cranked in a left-footed shot from the
    12-yard line. The goal was the seventh of the year for Onderlinde. Dyk
    then set up freshman Dana Haan (Lynden, WA) for Calvin's second goal as
    she sent a pass up the middle that gave Haan a breakaway opportunity.
    Haan converted the chance for her ninth goal of the year. Freshman
    Becky Welsh (Delaware, OH) completed the scoring for the Knights as she
    scored unassisted in the 72nd minute. The goal was the third of the
    year for Welsh.

    Sophomore goaltenders Leah VanderPloeg (Unity Christian) and Nina Recker
    (Grand Rapids Christian) split time in nets for Calvin with VanderPloeg
    coming up with four saves and Recker three saves. Playing in their
    final games in a Calvin uniform Saturday were seniors Stephanie Post
    (Grand Rapids Christian) and April Phelps (Holland Christian).

    Dyk finished as Calvin's leading scorer for the second straight year as
    she concluded the season with 12 goals and eight assists for 32 points
    while Haan was second with nine goal, four assists and 22 points and
    Onderlinde third with seven goals, six assists and 20 points.

    With its 11 victories, Calvin reached the double-digit plateau in
    victories for the 12th consecutive year. In 13 years of varsity play,
    Calvin has never had a losing season and has an overall won-loss record
    of 172-59-5 for a winning percentage of .739.

    MEN'S SOCCER

    With a chance to break the .500 barrier for the first time all season,
    Calvin once again came up just short as the Knights suffered a 2-1 loss
    at Alma. The Scots have now won six straight games against Calvin
    dating back to 1998. Now 8-9-1 overall, Calvin must win its final two
    games to crack the .500 mark. The Knights host Albion Wednesday at 3:00
    pm and rival Hope next Saturday at 1:30 pm. With two games left, the
    Knights sit in fourth place in the MIAA standings with a 5-4-1
    conference record.

    Alma opened the scoring in the 19th minute as senior Paul Aceto scored
    off an assist from Adam Sobczak. Calvin countered with a goal by senior
    Jason DeJonge (Western Michigan Christian) in the 79th minute with
    senior Jon VerMerris gaining an assist on the play. The goal was the
    17th of the year for DeJonge.

    Alma's Jeremiah Roberts scored the game-winner however with just 4:18
    left in regulation with Aceto earning an assist on the play.

    Calvin outshot Alma 16-12 in the contest with junior goaltender Matt
    Thelen (Grand Haven) collecting eight saves in defeat.

    VOLLEYBALL

    Calvin concluded its play in the Midwest Invitational on Saturday
    afternoon, picking up two more victories to place fifth. The Knights
    beat Bluffton College earlier in the day by a score of 15-11, 6-15,
    15-8, and 15-11. In the fifth place game against Wheaton College it took
    the Knights four games to knock off the Thunder 10-15, 16-14, 15-2,
    15-4.

    Leading the Knights in the Bluffton game was all tournament team honoree
    Rhonda Volkers as she came up with 17 kills, 12 digs, 5 aces and 2
    blocks. Also chipping in was Ann Wiersma who had 16 kills, 5 digs, and 2
    blocks. Melissa Pell contributed 8 kills and 6 blocks. Sara Ahrenholz
    dished out 51 assists.

    Calvin was led in the Wheaton match by Wiersma who tallied 22 kills, 8
    digs, and 1 block. Also helping out the Knights was Volkers who also had
    a great performance as she recorded 16 kills, 12 digs, 7 aces and 2
    blocks. Ahrenholz had 57 assists, 8 digs, 4 blocks and 4 aces. In the
    victory the Knights set a new Calvin single match record with 17 service
    aces.

    The Knights (25-7, 11-2 MIAA) return to action on Wednesday evening when
    they open the MIAA tournament at home with a first round match against
    the Belles of St. Mary's College at 7 PM.

    MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING

    For the third consecutive year, the Calvin men's swim team captured
    first place at the Grand Valley Relays while the Calvin women took
    third. Saturday's competition marked the season-openers for both teams
    as the Calvin men took first place with 132 points, six points ahead of
    second place Wayne State while the Calvin women took third place with
    110 points, 24 points behind first place Grand Valley and eight points
    behind second place Wayne State.

    In both competitions, Calvin was the top NCAA Division III school as
    Albion took fourth (70) and Alma fifth (50) in the men's competition
    while Albion took fourth (66) and Alma fifth (54) in the women's
    competition.

    In the men's competition, Calvin took first place in seven relay events
    as it won the 300 butterfly relay (2:44.50); the 300 backstroke relay
    (2:49.55); 800 yard freestyle relay (7:24.92); 400 yard medley relay
    (3:48.46); 200 yard freestyle relay (1:29.68); 1,500 yard freestyle
    relay (15:45.31) and 400 yard freestyle relay (3:17.46).

    Calvin was led in the 300 butterfly relay by freshman Brad White
    (Dayton, OH), junior Bryan Linn (Indianapolis, IN) and sophomore A.J.
    Penninga (Grand Rapids Christian). White also led off Calvin's 200
    freestyle relay that included junior Jordan Zacharia (Annondale, VA);
    junior Kevin Hawkins (Oakdale, CA) and Penninga. The 1,500 freestyle
    relay was made up of freshman Dan Hekman (Calimesa, CA), Zacharia and
    junior Chris Veltman (Duarte, CA) while its 400 freestyle relay was
    Penninga, Zacharia, Veltman and White. Calvin's 300 backstroke relay
    was made up of sophomore Ryan Johnson (Grand Haven), freshman Cory
    Draper (Middlebury, IN) and sophomore Jake VanderPlas (Palo Alto, CA)
    while its 800 freestyle relay consisted of Veltman, Zacharia, Hekman and
    Penninga. In addition, Calvin's 400 medley relay team was made up of
    VanderPlas, freshman Mike Dallas (Rockford), Draper and Linn.

    In the women's competition, Calvin took first place in the 500 freestyle
    relay (4:56.35) and 200 freestyle relay (1:42.19). Calvin's 500
    freestyle relay was comprised of juniors Erin Kloostra (Grand Rapids
    Christian); Kate Conrad (Calvin Christian) and sophomores Katie
    Nagelkirk (Holland Christian) and Jenny Los (Holland Christian).
    Calvin's 200 freestyle relay was comprised of Nagelkirk, Conrad,
    sophomore Ann Kuiper (Houghton) and Kloostra.

    Both Calvin teams open their dual meet seasons up next Friday when they
    host Wayne State at 6:00 pm.
