CALVIN SPORTS ROUNDUP FOR Saturday, September 23
MEN'S SOCCER
Calvin picked up its first MIAA win of the season, downing previously
unbeaten Olivet 4-1 Saturday afternoon. Heading into Saturday's contest,
the Comets had not been scored on for the a string of 290 minutes. The
victory lifts the Knights to 4-5 overall (1-1 MIAA) and brings the
Comet's record to 7-1 (1-1 MIAA).
The Comets scored first as Jeremy Ignace pounded home a loose ball in
front of the net to give Olivet an early 1-0 lead. This would be the
last scoring that Olivet would see for the game though as the Knights
took over the game from that point on. Calvin's leading scorer Jason
DeJonge put the Knights on the scoreboard with a booming shot from about
6 yards out, assisted by a pass from David VanderLugt. Calvin's second
goal also came from DeJonge as he stole the ball from an Olivet player
and scored, beating two Comet defenders. The two goals in Saturday's
game were DeJonge's 8th and 9th of the season. Steve Bishop gave Calvin
a 3-1 lead with a great header that found the back of the net, set up
beautifully on a cross by Marcus Byeman.
The second half proved to be physical as seven yellow cards were given
out. Calvin's fourth and final goal came off of a second half foul.
After following a shot to the goal, Jon VerMerris was taken down in the
Olivet penalty box, giving VerMerris a penalty kick. VerMerris
capitalized on the penalty kick, tucking it neatly in the lower left
corner of the goal in the 82nd minute to close out the scoring.
Calvin junior goalkeeper Matt Thelen (Grand Haven) did a great job
keeping the Comets out of the net by turning away 5 shots while Olivet
keeper, Jeff Williams recorded 3 saves.
Calvin will return to action when they face Goshen in a non-conference
game Tuesday at 4 PM.
WOMEN'S SOCCER
The Calvin Women's Soccer team moved to 3-5 overall (2-2 MIAA) with a
2-1 victory over the Olivet Comets on Saturday afternoon. The loss drops
the Comets to 2-2-1 overall (2-1-1 MIAA).
Tricia Dyk led the Knights with two first half goals. She scored in the
15th minute on an assist from Larissa Onderlinde. The other Dyk goal
came in the 26th minute as Stephanie Post assisted her. The lone Olivet
goal came in the 64th minute as Laura Fiorino scored on a ball from
Doris Sullivan.
