CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR TUESDAY, September 19, 2000
VOLLEYBALL
The Calvin College Women's Varsity Volleyball team raised its record to
an impressive 11-3 (3-1 MIAA) mark by knocking off the Belles of St.
Mary's College. St. Mary's (0-10, 0-4 MIAA) had difficulty generating
offense as Calvin swept all three games by scores of 15-3, 15-2, and
15-2.
Ann Wiersma tallied 12 kills, 3 blocks, and 2 digs to lead the
Knights. Also adding to the winning effort was Melissa Pell with 8
kills and 4 blocks. Rhonda Volkers chipped in with 7 kills and 3 digs.
Leading the Knights in serving was Alicia DeGroot who served up 4 aces.
Leading the Belles was Angela Meyers who had 7 kills and 7 digs. Also
contributing for St. Mary's was Leigh Ann Madesich who had 8 digs.
Calvin will once again return to action on Friday, September 22. They
will take on the Bulldogs of Adrian College. The game is scheduled to
start at 7 PM.
WOMEN'S GOLF
Calvin finished seventh at an MIAA outing hosted by Kalamazoo Tuesday
afternoon at the Miham Golf Club with a team score of 418 strokes.
Calvin's score was an improvement of seven strokes over its Saturday
total at the first league outing of the year.
Albion took first with a score of 346 Tuesday to build a 25-stroke lead
over second place Hope.
Calvin's top individual Tuesday was freshman Amber Beardslee (Lakeview)
who carded a round of 96 while senior Jill Scott (St. John, IN) was next
at 102. Senior Alyssa Bruinsma (Grand Rapids Christian) was Calvin's
third finisher with a round of 106 with sophomore Becky Rietema (Grand
Rapids Christian) carding a round of 114; sophomore Mo Stokeley
(Lakeview) a round of 115 and freshman Rachel Kuipers (Middleville) a
round of 128.
The next MIAA outing is scheduled for next Wedneday at the Medalist
Golf Club with Albion serving as host.
