REPORT FOR SEPTEMBER 5, 2000
VOLLEYBALL
Calvin's women's volleyball team increased their record to 5-0
(1-0 MIAA) with a three
games to zero victory over the Comets of Olivet College (0-5,
0-1 in MIAA). Calvin
captured the first game by a score of 15-4 and the second game
by a score of 15-3.
Looking tough, the third game would not prove to be so easy
for the Knights though. Olivet
held their own for much of the first part of the game, until
Calvin was finally able to
overcome them with a 15-7 score.
Senior Rhonda Volkers (Holland Christian) led the attack for
the Knights with 13 monster
kills. She also added an ace, two blocks, and two digs. Senior
Ann Wiersma (Escondido
Calvin Christian) chipped in with seven kills, as did Senior
Tricia Balkema (Central Valley
Christian). Junior Sara Ahrenholz (Central Minnesota
Christian) also had a superb game as
she came up with 34 assists and six digs. Olivet was led by
Senior Jeena Bowers, who
rattled off five kills and stretched for 12 digs.
Calvin's next match will be part of a tri-match homestand this
Saturday as they host both
Cornerstone University and arch-rival Hope College. Calvin
will face the Flying Dutchmen
of Hope at 11:00 AM. The Cornerstone match will follow at 3:00
PM.
MEN'S SOCCER
WHEATON, IL - Calvin remained winless on its 2000 campaign,
dropping a 1-0
heartbreaker at nationally-ranked Wheaton Tuesday night at
East McCulley Field.
Ranked third nationally, Wheaton (2-0-1) broke a scoreless tie
with just 7:14 left in
regulation as Wheaton sophomore John Kightlinger bent in a
free kick over the
outstretched arms of Calvin goaltender Matt Thelen (Grand
Haven) from just outside the
Calvin penalty box. Kightlinger's goal came on a quick restart
as he let go of a shot before
Calvin could form a defensive wall in front.
Both teams threatened in the first half but did not score.
Thelen denied a pair of Wheaton
scoring chances with a pair of splendid saves. Calvin came
close in the first nine minutes as
senior Jason DeJonge (Western Michigan Christian) broke loose
on a semi-breakaway and
ripped a shot that Wheaton goaltender David Casper deflected
just wide of the net.
Calvin senior Brian Douma (Redmond, WA) also had a strong
scoring chance in the first
half but was denied on a save by Casper.
Calvin dominated the opening stages of the second half but
could not capitalize. Wheaton
then came back with the best chance of the game to that point
as Josh West ripped a shot
flush off the cross-bar on a 2-on-1 situation with 31 minutes
left in regulation. Calvin came
close with 18 minutes left as freshman Paul Groenewal
(Wyckoff, NJ) fed junior Joel
Tlachac (Grand Haven) with a pass that nearly freed Tlachac
for a breakaway up the
middle.
Wheaton's game-winning play occurred on a take-down just
outside the Calvin penalty
area with Kightlinger capitalizing on the quick restart.
Wheaton finished with a 22-11 shots at goal advantage with
both goaltenders collecting five
saves. In addition, Calvin received strong defensive back-line
play from senior Marcus
Byeman (Redmond, WA), juniors Jamie Bassow (Grand Haven) and
Peter Knoester
(Grand Rapids Christian) and sophomore Charles Telep
(Sewickley, PA).
Calvin is back in action Friday when it hosts Spring Arbor at
4:00 pm in the first day of
competition of the Wendy's Classic.
