WOMEN'S SOCCER
Calvin opened its 2000 campaign with a 2-0 victory over Cornerstone
Saturday afternoon at Calvin Field. Calvin opened the scoring in the
34th minute as senior Stephanie Post (Grand Rapids Christian) booted in
a low hard shot from 15 yards out on an assist from sophomore Tricia Dyk
(Western Michigan Christian). Calvin used the goal to take a 1-0 lead
into halftime.
With hot, humid temperatures, Calvin substituted early and often in the
second half and eventually wore down the Cornerstone defense for the
game-clinching goal as junior Tara Bergsma (Calvin Christian) ripped in
a shot in the 71st minute after collecting a crossing pass from junior
Larissa Onderlinde (Kalamazoo Christian).
Calvin outshot the visiting Golden Eagles (1-3) 40-13 with sophomore
goaltender Leah VanderPloeg (Unity Christian) collecting the shutout in
nets as she registered eight saves.
Calvin is back in action Saturday when it hosts nationally-ranked Ohio
Wesleyan at noon.
MEN'S SOCCER
Despite outshooting Rose-Hulman 25-9 including 14-3 in the second half,
Calvin suffered a 4-2 season-opening defeat Saturday afternoon in Terre
Haute, Indiana. Rose-Hulman used quick conterattacks to outscore the
Knights including a pair of goals in the final 16 minutes of
regulation.
Calvin scored first as senior Marcus Byeman (Redmond, WA) scored in the
34th minute after stealing a Rose-Hulman pass. The Engineers countered
with a goal in the 42nd minute however to knot the score at 1-1 at
halftime.
Senior Brian Douma (Redmond, WA) gave Calvin an early 2-1 lead as he
scored in the 49th minute on an assist from Byeman. Rose-Hulman came
back with a goal in the 53rd minute to tie the game and then went ahead
in the 75th minute and added the clincher in the 82nd minute.
Calvin is back in action tomorrow when it travels to Millikin for a
1:00 pm game in Decateur, Illinois.
VOLLEYBALL
Calvin opened play with a pair of victories at the Hornet Invitational,
downing Baldwin-Wallace 15-4, 8-15, 15-8, 15-9 and Bluffton 16-14, 15-9,
15-7.
In the victory over Baldwin-Wallace, Calvin was paced by senior
All-American Rhonda Volkers (Holland Chrisitan) who came up with 14
kills while senior Ann Wiersma (Vista, CA) had 13 kills and four service
aces. Junior Michelle Bowen (Troy) added 11 kills while junior setter
Sara Ahrenholz (Prinsburg, MN) tossed out 49 assists while collecting 14
digs.
Calvin used a complete team effort in its win over Bluffton as seven
different players were credited with assists with Ahrenholz leading the
way with 38 assists. Volkers continued her strong play up front with 15
kills and two blocks while Wiersma had 13 kills and two service aces.
Senior Alicia DeGroot (Tulare, CA) chipped in with seven digs.
Calvin returns to action tomorrow when it faces undefeated Anderson at
10:00 in a pool-play match.
