Be Bold: Internships Matter

An internship is an opportunity to try your calling on for size. With 86% of Calvin students graduating with at least one internship under their belt, you know you'll walk into your field with the skills and the experience you need to succeed. We talked with three students about their internship experiences and here's what they had to say:

Allyson Wierenga '19

Allyson

MAJOR: English literature
HOMETOWN: Byron Center, Michigan
INTERNSHIP: Grand Rapids Art Museum

HOW DID THE INTERNSHIP CHANGE YOU?
"My internship taught me more about the corporate world. I also became more confident in my abilities as a worker and a learner, and was not as afraid to ask for help when I needed it."

Edwin Kpodzro '18

Edwin

Major: mechanical engineering; math minor
Hometown: Accra, Ghana
Internship: Dematic Corp.

WHY DO AN INTERNSHIP?
"Internships are a great opportunity to measure how interested you are in a field, especially for professional programs like engineering. Take one if you can! They are also awesome avenues for gaining experience and for networking."

John Kim '17

John

Major: international development
Hometown: Bucheon City, South Korea
Internship: Atlanta Dream Center

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU HAVE FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS THINKING ABOUT INTERNSHIPS?
"I don't think you can go wrong when it comes to internships. No experience is going to be wasted. If anything, it will build character, so enjoy! Take a few applications, try them out, ask mentors and people you trust, and go for it!"
