Current role: Middle School Science Teacher at the Potter’s House School + Educational Leadership Program at Calvin Graduate Studies in Education

What kinds of classroom experience did you get through Calvin's teacher education program?
Calvin’s teacher program is intentional in getting prospective teachers into classrooms for firsthand learning. I was able to do my observations in a 6th grade classroom at Our Savior Lutheran School, my student aid work in a 7th grade classroom at Grand Rapids Christian Middle School, and my student teaching for 6–8th science teaching out in New Jersey at Mustard Seed School. Also, Calvin connected me to an opportunity in Malaysia to teach English for a summer during my sophomore year.

What sets Calvin’s education program apart from others? How did Calvin equip you in ways other programs may not have?
The program is distinguished by its rich foundation of Christian educational philosophy. It really sets the work of a teacher in the perspective of the Kingdom, helping prospective teachers find themselves and their future careers as part of a grand work of restoring the world. It also has a wide diversity in its student body, which adds to the experience of learning as a future teacher; the diversity of cultures, backgrounds, dreams and hopes all come together to make the learning in Calvin’s education program a fuller experience.

What’s one thing you would want to tell someone starting their journey at Calvin?
The beauty of a liberal arts school founded in faith like Calvin is that you are invited to explore the vastness of God’s world. A teacher is first a learner and Calvin is an amazing place to venture out and to discover known and hidden passions as a student. Your life's course does not need to be decided in your first year. Being attentive to God’s voice and being open-hearted to his leading will help you pursue his calling for your life.

What’s one thing that surprised you about Calvin?
One thing that surprised me about Calvin was its diversity. Although it is not a college in a metropolitan city, you find a wide range of cultures and nationalities represented at Calvin. This provides a unique opportunity to learn from peers as well as from professors, to gain a broader perspective, and to share companionship around the globe.
