Calvin Start-Ups seeks to develop a diverse environment in thought, background, and discipline that incubates redemptive solutions within collaborative and mentor-driven spaces.
Who are we?
At Calvin Start-Ups, we believe that entrepreneurial pursuits are a deeply meaningful task. We believe that when we start-up something new in the world, even if it is our small venture–a new art studio, or a new mobile app, or a nonprofit organization–we have the opportunity to go beyond being reactive to culture, and instead become creative in it. Culture is shaped by creating more of it, and entrepreneurs are at the forefront of reigning in the future paradigm of cultural possibilities.
So what do we do?
Calvin Start-Ups seeks to develop a diverse environment in thought, background, and discipline that incubates redemptive solutions within collaborative and mentor-driven spaces in Calvin University. In broad strokes, our organization explores the early stages of starting up entrepreneurial ideas, especially ones that are ethical and redemptive – ventures that undo systems of exploitation.
In a typical year, our members form into diverse, interdisciplinary teams to rally around starting new entrepreneurial ideas. We learn innovation methodologies to prototype and test these ideas which we bring to pitch competitions to compete for funding. Last spring, we competed in the MWEST challenge where our teams won 4 out of 9 of the possible prizes, more than any other school in West Michigan!
Our organization will likely look very differently this year, but we have something exciting brewing… In 2020, we are planning to start Calvin’s FIRST student-run and owned business. We need help here, so if this is something that excites you, get in touch with us!
We are excited to see you join this welcoming community that is willing to explore, fail, and grow together in the process. We believe that as Christians, we are called to create - to participate in culture-shaping endeavors that bend this world towards God’s vision of human flourishing. See you there!
