Calvin Chimes

Basic information

Chimes is the official student newspaper of Calvin University. Its mission is to serve the community of Calvin University in a variety of ways: to reform, review, challenge, and foster dialogue within the community.

Founded in 1907, Chimes began as a monthly publication focused more on literary review and writers than on reporting news. In the 1940s, Chimes became a weekly print newspaper. Created 100 percent by students, for students, Chimes provides a venue for the discussion of issues, events and ideas as we work out what we believe the Calvin community should look like and what we can do to make it better.

In 2012, Chimes updated its website and began publishing online content each week while maintaining its weekly Friday print edition. The online publications have prompted the development of a vibrant new community of readers amongst Calvin alumni and families. You can find our articles online at
