1st VanReken taps many of Calvin College's maple trees for the production of maple syrup. The sap is collected for several weeks and boiled over several weekends until is becomes maple syrup. We sell the syrup for floor funds and have a pancake dinner to celebrate our hard work. Maple syrup production allows residents of first vR to have a hands on experience in learning what it takes to make syrup and take ownership and responsibility Members of the floor must take boiling shifts and collect their sap, often daily. Overall, students grow closer to one another through the process of making something from the resources God provided and students have fun.
