MLK Young Leaders Weekend is a three day Pre-College program retreat held in January around the day of celebration for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The weekend is designed to explore the philosophy of Martin Luther King Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement in effecting positive social change.

A $40 enrollment fee is required with the application and waiver form. Checks shoud be made out to Calvin College.

The Program

This program is geared towards equipping young leaders to lead effectively in every aspect of their lives:

  • In their local community/neighborhood
  • In their high school
  • In their church
  • Among their peers and friends
  • And, influencing the generation under them

Participants will spend 3 days living on Calvin’s campus at the Prince Hotel with Pre-College Programs Coordinator Carena Gang, and Pre-College Programs Student Ambassadors. In addition, they will participate in workshops focusing on leadership development and finding ones’ purpose, travel to the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History in Detroit MI, visit a local church, a community service-learning project, attend Calvin’s J-series segment on MLK Day, and enjoy campus life!. If a student is interested in bettering their community, themselves and developing their leadership skills, then the MLK Young Leaders program is for them.

Who can apply? 9th – 12th graders of all ethnic backgrounds.
