Adult family members participate with their student in one of four spring and summer orientation PASSPORT sessions! This one-day program is the first of our two-part orientation that is required for new first-year students.

PASSPORT for families is a day-long program designed for you as an adult family member as well as your new student. Learn about Calvin through seminars and discussions that highlight the range of opportunities and services for your student.

  • PASSPORT I – May 4
  • PASSPORT II – June 22
  • PASSPORT III – July 9
  • PASSPORT IV – August 29 7

Please note that PASSPORTs are expected to take the entire day, from approximately 8 a.m. until 7 p.m., and and all sessions are required. If your student cannot attend for the entire day, please have them register for another date.

Wilderness Orientation Families

All students attending Wilderness Orientation must also attend PASSPORT. Although the Wilderness Orientation is just for your student, you are invited to attend PASSPORT with them. Please click here for more information about our Wilderness Orientation trips.

What to expect at PASSPORT

At PASSPORT you will

  • Learn about services the college provides
  • Become familiar with the college's vision and curriculum
  • Attend a variety of workshops and model classes
  • Meet other family members and examine what this time of transition means for you as a family

We are unable to offer residence hall housing for families during PASSPORTs I and V. Please arrange for your own housing with the Prince Conference Center or an off-campus option.

Residence hall option

When your student registers you to attend PASSPORT, they will also be able to register you for on-campus accommodations in a residence hall for families only. Families and couples will be given a dorm suite (two bedrooms with an adjoining bathroom) while individual parents will share a suite with another same-gendered parent.

Please note there is a $35 charge for families to stay in the residence halls. This fee covers accommodations for all additional family members.

Prince Conference Center option

The Prince Conference Center, a hotel owned and operated by Calvin College, is also available for on-campus housing, offering a limited number of rooms for a fee. When calling to reserve a room, mention that you are with PASSPORT and you will receive a slight discount.

Students register online for their choice of PASSPORT orientation dates. When they register themselves, they can also register you and any additional family members. Registration closes two weeks before the start of the session.

Some things to keep in mind about registration:
  • While we welcome all family members to attend PASSPORT, please note that the program is designed for adults. Younger family members are welcome to accompany parents, but we are unable to provide programming for them.
  • A $250 orientation fee will be charged to your student’s account in early September. This fee covers all costs (food, programming, staffing, and student housing) associated with orientation—both PASSPORT and QUEST—except housing for parents and family members. Up to two adult family members can attend PASSPORT at no further cost; additional family members will be charged $50 each. Note that additional costs are associated with Wilderness Orientation, IMPACT, and International PASSPORT.
  • Registration includes a student housing option for PASSPORTs I, II and III and a parent/family housing option for PASSPORTs II and III. There is no charge for your student to stay in the residence halls, but there is a $35 charge that covers all family members staying in the residence halls. If you and/or your student choose not to stay in the residence halls, your student's Orientation cost will not decrease.
