For this course, you will explore the complex issues of healthcare and disability in Uganda from a multicultural perspective. You will first learn on campus about the richness of Ugandan culture, relationships between disability and poverty, and how to actively provide services for families. You will then travel to Kampala, Uganda and work directly with professionals serving children and their families in collaboration with Hope Speaks, a non-profit started by Calvin alumni. You will work in a variety of settings, including the Hope Speaks clinic, children’s homes, and outreach clinics in shanty towns. Assignments include active participation in service opportunities, reflective journals on readings and experiences, and group presentations. Readings will include “When Helping Hurts” by Corbett and Fikkert, in addition to articles on healthcare and poverty. To experience the beauty of God's creation, we will end the trip with an overnight safari. No prerequisites are required, except for having an open heart to learn. This course will fulfill the CCE requirement, if desired. Fee: $4277. January 6–8 on campus; January 10–26. J. Bates, B. Kreisman. Off Campus
