But rest is intimately tied to creati on, and in the crush of today's world, it takes courage and discipline to lay plans and fears aside and listen for the voice that speaks in the stillness. #904 PROGRESSIVE EVANGELICAL POLITICS
Some say the era of the American religious right is over. Which direction will evangelicals head next? Jim Wallis, founder of Sojour ners and author of the bestseller God’s Politics: Why the Right Gets it Wrong and the Left Doesn¹t Get it, pinpoints a “moral center” and its corresponding political revival in America today. Karen Saupe hosts.

12696 God's Politics: Why the Right Gets It Wrong and the Left Doesn't Get It Wallis, Jim 5/5/2005 In the lecture, which followed the concepts of his most recent book, he asserted that moral values encompass actions and attitudes toward a host of issues, including povert y, the environment, criminal justice and war. Evangelical Christians are called to define "moral values" much more broadly than the current trend to look exclusively at wedge issues like abortion and gay marriage, and that religion will be, and should be a factor in American public and political life. 10543 Ethiopia Shall Soon Stretch Out Their Hands Unto God Walls, Andrew 7/17/2002 Christianity has a history in Africa that is two thousand years long. Afro-America has played a crucial part in a substantial period of that history. There was a time when the majority of African Christians lived in the Americas, and when these saw themselves as the key to the regeneration of the African Continent. The lecture traces the involvement of Christians of the African diaspora in the evangelization of the Americ as, the story of how they produced the first Protestant Church in the tropical Africa, their place as the forefront of nineteenth century missions in much of Africa, and their impact on African educational and economic development. 17147 Kicking at the Darkness: Methodological Reflections Walsh, Brian 4/19/2012 In this session, Brian Walsh reflects on the nature, assumptions, and goals of "theological criticism" of contemporary music, using his work on Bruce Cockburn as a n example. What happens when art is taken as a source, in dialogue with Scripture, for theological reflection? How is the art respected as art and not just “used” to make a theological point? How does this kind of work help to engender and sha pe a Christian imagination? Campus Store (college) : Available for sale.

47 Rethinking the Relationship between Worship and Culture Ward, Karen 1/13/2001 Most of the tensions over worship today concern the relationship of worship to culture. Should worship be relevant to our culture? What if culture diminishes the central m essage of the gospel? Shouldn't worship also be counter-cultural? And what about all those cross-cultural resources for worship? This workshop will present a framework for rethinking rhe relationship of worship and culture, as well as practical example s and case studies from a wide variety of ethnic and cultural traditions.

14997 Assumptions that Grow Teachers Weimer, Maryellen 11/5/2008 Most college teachers begin their careers full of enthusiasm for teaching. But their idealistic goals and the realities of academic careers often collide, leaving teachers w ith tarnished goals and sometimes cynical perspectives. Beliefs about teaching directly impact practice in the classroom. Some increase instructional effectiveness and contribute to long term growth. What are those assumptions on which solid instructional practice can be set and what beliefs foster the growth and development of teachers? The goal of this session is to propose ways of thinking about growth and change that can increase both the motivation to teach and effectiveness in the classroom.
Weim er is founding editor of "The Teaching Professor" newsletter and website (http://www.teachingprofessor.com) as well as a wonderfully helpful blog (http://teachingprofessor.blogspot.com/).

Infecting classrooms & research labs with Bacteriophage
Wertz, John 3/1/2012 Do you know what bacteriophage are? Do you know why they are important in global health and disease? What would be the best way for you to learn about this: a lecture from m e or isolating one, "seeing" it grow, talking about it with your friends, extracting its DNA, and identifying all of its genes? With funding from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute we are acting on the hypothesis that biological learning is enh anced and retained more effectively by using the research laboratory as the classroom. Incoming freshmen now have the opportunity to do hands-on, scientifically relevant, real-world research on bacteriophage as a vehicle for learning about the natural wor ld, with surprising results. 12614 Dancing About Architecture: Exploring the Connection Between Music and Words Whitman, Andy 4/2/2005 The musician Elvis Costello once stated, "Writing about music is like dancing about architecture: it’s a really stupid thing to want to do." Costello points out the inevitable conundrum faced by any music critic: how to communicate the ineffable, sublime qualities of music that cannot be fully articulated. The problem is only compounded when music deals with matters of the soul, our deepest longings, our most sacred and personal experiences and intimations of God. In this workshop, Paste Magazine music critic Andy Whitman explores the connection between music and words, and how to bridge the gap between the inexpressible and the printed page. 13675 Worship Symposium Whitvliet, John 1/31/2006 The Calvin Symposium on Worship seeks the deepening and integration of all aspects of worship. As worshipers, we concentrate on our specific interests and gifts in seminars and workshops, and experience their integration into the full mission of worship as we gather for the Symposium's worship services. In interdisciplinary and ecumenical conversations, we ask searching questions, exchange dilemmas, encourage each other. We leave with a renewed commitment to the full ministry of the church. 18356 Epic Story of America's Great Migration, The Wilkerson, Isabel 1/8/2014 A Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and bestselling author, Wilkerson spent 15 years interviewing more than 1,200 people to write The Warmth of Other Suns, her award-winning work of narrative nonfiction that tells the epic story of the decades-long migration of black citizens who fled the South for northern and western cities in search of a better life. From 1915 to 1970, this exodus of almost six million people changed the face of America and has become known as the Great Migration. Toni Morrison calls the book “profound, necessary, and a delight to read.” Tom Brokaw praises it as “an epic for all Americans who want to understand the making of our modern nation.” Wilkerson is a gifted and passionate speaker who has addressed the topics of migration, social justice, urban affairs and 20th Century history at universities across the country and in Europe.

14496 Understanding the Battle Between the Flesh and the Spirit - and the Way Out Willard, Dallas 1/25/2008 Dr. Dallas Willard will help workshop participants understand Paul’s famous words about what it means to "live by the Spirit" and how doing so conflicts with the sinful nature that clings to us. Why is this a battle, and how can Paul’s words point us to the way out of what could be a never-ending struggle? Campus Store (college) : Available for sale.

14481 Renovation of the Heart: Spirituality Willard, Dallas; Zandstra, Pat 1/24/2008 Pastors, musicians, and worship leaders know that they are no more immune to spiritual struggles than any other members of the congregation. We all find regular occasion to regret flaws in our Christian character and so to pray for strength to make more progress toward Christ-likeness in both our public lives as church leaders and in our private times as well. Dr. Dallas Willard believes that just this kind of spirit transfo rmation can and will happen when we allow God to bring every element of our being into harmony with the will of God and the kingdom of God. By being transformed from the inside out, we become apprentices of Christ Jesus. As the old spiritual has us sing, "Lord, I want to be a Christian in my heart, in my heart." This workshop will focus on key spiritual disciplines and practices that can help bring our hearts into living contact with the grace of God, renovating us from the ruin of sin into the shining likeness of our Savior. The aim will be on specific steps toward specific changes that anyone can make, from stepping out of pornographic obsession to freedom from anger and contempt. The seminar will conclude with a panel of pastors and church le aders who will discuss the application of Dr. Willard’s advice in worship, sermons, and church life. 16941 Does Sexual Orientation Equal Identity? Williams Paris, Jenell
IC1205
The practice of labeling people by sexual orientation—homosexual, heterosexual, etc.—started only a century ago. At times labels can help make sense of our world, but at other times labeling individuals can be dehumanizing and can even be a form of injustice. Our sexuality need not define us, argues Jenell Williams Paris, anthropology professor at Messiah College and author of The End of Sexual Identity : Why Sex is Too Important to Define Who We Are. Shirley Hoogstra hosts.

With the well-atte sted loss of lament from much church services, there is much that Christians stand to learn from how popular musicians are expressing and engaging in lament. This session will focus both on what popular musicians can teach American churches about lament, as well as what the psalms have to offer the church and broader culture for engaging in lament. 14624 Religious Heritage of Right Talk:
A Symposium, The
Witte, John Jr.; Wolterstorff, Nicholas 3/31/2008 Is religion opposed to rights? Does justice require curbing religious influence? Both popular and academic discussions of human rights tend to see religion as a threat. Thus 'enlightened' secularists are still given to alarmist accounts of how religious traditions squelch civil rights, or how confessional communities trample over human rights claims. On this account, only 'secular' democracy can secure justice, often precise ly against the claims of religion.

But this version of the story has been called into question by recent research. On Monday, March 31, Calvin College will host a symposium with two internationally-acclaimed scholars who have a very different story to tell. John Witte, Jr., Robitscher Professor of Law and Director of the Center for the Study of Law and Religion at Emory University, will discuss the roots and origins of a modern account of human rights in early modern Calvinism. And Nicholas Wolters torff, Noah Porter Professor of Philosophical Theology Emeritus at Yale, will dig back even further, arguing that modern intuitions about rights and justice are indebted to Hebrew and Christian scriptures - and cannot be sustained by a wholly secular etho s.

Is it fair to hire a religion reporter who believes in one particular religion? Could an athiest reporter understand the world of the religiou s? 11742 Spiritual Pilgrimage in an Age of World Religions Woodward, Kenneth 1/8/2004 Christians have traditionally looked on this life as a pilgrimage to the next. Indeed, the idea that we all are embarked on a journey of faith has become a cliche in contemp orary homiletics, church hymns and even liturgies. But what does going on a pilgrimage mean in the context of the convergence of world religions so evident in our time? Are all religions basically the same thing in different packages? Have other religions something to teach Christians? Kenneth Woodward, longtime religion editor and senior writer for Newsweek, will explore these questions based on his professional experience of writing about world religions and his personal experience with religious leader s as diverse as Billy Graham and the Dalai Lama. #215 WHEN THEOLOGIANS STUDY JESUS It may come as a surprise to many Christians that theologians have vastly different ideas of who Christ was, what His mission was, and whet her there was even a resurrection! They also assign varying degrees of reliability to Scripture. Theologian and historian N.T. Wright of Westminster Abbey explains the complications and what he does about them.

10799 What St. Paul Really Said Wright, N.T. (Tom) 1/23/2003 Paul was a zealous Jew whose explosive meeting with Jesus led him to believe that Israel’s God had declared Jesus to be the Messiah, and hence the true Lord of the who le world. N.T. Wright, Canon Theologian of Westminster Abbey and author of What St. Paul Really Said, determines the best way to understand Paul 20 centuries later. He will explain that Paul’s commission to be the “apostle to the Gentiles̶ 1; led him to hammer out a theology that was essentially a Jewish message for the pagan world, reshaped around Jesus, energized by the Spirit, and taking shape as a deeply personal and political message. Rediscovering his complex but breathtaking vision o f God, the world and the gospel is a central element in the urgent tasks facing today’s church. Bookstore (college) : Available for sale.
