17249 How I Ended Up Writing About Religion: Not a Story of Religious Conviction Van Biema, David 4/21/2012 For about a decade, David Van Biema was the chief religion writer for Time magazine. And yet he was brought up in no faith and had very little contact with religion until he took up the beat in 1997. It has taken him fifteen years to figure out why this was, in fact, a natural step. The story involves three (or possibly four) Bibles. Heritage Hall : Archive/Available for Research

17216 Transformative Power of Story, The Vanderpool, Clare 4/21/2012 Stories are the great common denominator in our lives. We all have them, we all tell them, and we all need them. This session takes a look at the transformative power of sto ry, exploring how it can change us in the telling and in the listening. Through story we reveal things and make them known, especially to ourselves. And through story we recognize what is common to all of us: the ordinary. And in the telling, the ordinary can become beautiful and extraordinary. Heritage Hall : Archive/Available for Research

Vanderwell, Howard 1/25/2008 Many churches are asking whether they can really keep all generations working together, or whether it would be better to separate the generations according to their preferen ces in worship. Some voices suggest separation. Other churches with limited resources wonder if they are inferior because they have no choice in the matter. 16874 Traditions of Reading Sacred Texts in the Light of Modern Biblical Criticism vanLiere, Frans 3/11/2010 This presentation was be a follow-up to Bert deVries's presentation the previous week. It outlines how Genesis 1-3 was interpreted after it became to be regarded as sacred h istory. Ultimately, the problem with the current debate over human origins has less to do with the problem of human origins than with the question: How do we read these ancient texts? For centuries, the meaning of Genesis 1-3 was determined not so much by what these texts actually said, as by what they were supposed to say; they were thought to contain some hidden truth that was especially relevant for the religious community that held them as sacred, but this truth could only be uncovered through mystica l and spiritual reading. For centuries this is just how these texts were read: against a religious framework that assigned a deeper, mystical or theological meaning to these texts. These are the biblical hermeneutics underlying Paul's letter to the Corint hians, as well as the Reformed Confessions. However, modern biblical criticism has challenged this hermeneutical model. While a modern critical reading may solve many of the apparent contradictions between these sacred texts and science, it does raise the question: Can we still regard these texts as authoritative and sacred, if we read them in this way? Or do they become "just" stories, no longer the Word of God?

14709 Law and Order in the Urban Ghetto Venkatesh Sudhir 4/10/2008 Calvin College will be bringing a well-known sociologist to Grand Rapids in mid-April for its annual Bouma Lecture.

Sudhir Venkatesh will speak on April 10 at 3:30 pm in the Meeter Center Lecture Hall on "Law and Order in the Urban Ghetto."

Calvin sociology professor Mark Mulder says Venkatesh is a good fit for the annual Bouma Lecture, named for Donald Bouma who taught at Calvin from 1946 to 1960 and did groundbreaking work in civil rights and community organization.

"Dr. Bouma was always very passionate about issues of social justice," said Mulder, "as is our current department. Venkatesh conducts exhaustive ethnographic resear ch that offers compelling insights on urban poverty in the U.S. Most significantly, his findings interrogate numerous assumptions and misconceptions about poverty. There are complex social organizations, networks and processes that exist in what Venkatesh calls the urban ghetto."

14070 Realm of Ghosts, The: Sickness to Death in the Early Holland Colony Verhave, Jan Peter 11/10/2006 While at the Van Raalte Institute, Dr. Jan Peter Verhave is doing research on the state of health of the early Dutch immigrants and their vulnerability to certain disea ses, as derived from reports on their physical well-being in letters to family and friends in the Netherlands. Particularly during the first few years the settlers suffered a lot, and the poor living conditions triggered some fatal diseases. Epidemic dis eases came, as well as the naturalization trial: the Michigan ague. Dr. Verhave is a microbiologist at the Radboud University Medical Centre of Nijmegen, the Netherlands, and is an authority on the history of malaria and tropical diseases. In addition, he has an interest in religious and social matters of nineteenth century Netherlands and has dug up a collection of letters to immigrants in Iowa, which recently appeared in Iowa Letters (2004). He has published a book and significant articles on church h istory and on the issue of religion and vaccination. Bookstore (college) : Available for sale.

Rev.Vis, former RCA representative in Jerusalem and current tour leader to the Holy Land, will

14096 Free of Charge: Giving and Forgiving in a Culture Stripped of Grace Volf, Miroslav 1/18/2007 Director of the Yale Center for Faith and Culture and Henry B. Wright Professor of Theology at Yale Divinity School , Volf is one of the most respected living theologians. H e is author of dozens of scholarly articles and ten books including his most recent, " Free of Charge: Giving and Forgiving in a Culture Stripped of Grace" which was commissioned by Arch Bishop of Canterbury as the Official 2006 Lent Book. As a native of war-ravaged Croatia and son of a father who endured unspeakable torture at the hands of concentration camp guards, Dr. Volf understands more than many about the horrors of indiscriminate brutality. He also understands the unforgiving heart that can often result from living through such trauma. Despite his experiences, Dr. Volf has spent decades building a theological legacy of forgiveness, generosity, reconciliation and nonviolence. 13992 Giving Forgiveness Volf, Miroslav
#718 GIVING FORGIVENESS Originally broadcast April 8, 2007
It’s not always easy to trace the motives for the gifts we give. Where in our hearts do they come from? Might we look there too for one of the greatest gifts--that of forgiveness for a harm done? January Series guest and theologian Miroslav Volf, Director of the Yale Center for Faith and Culture at Yale Divinity School and author of Free of Charge: Giving a nd Forgiving in a Culture Stripped of Grace, explores the anatomy of forgiveness with host Shirley Hoogstra.

Exploring the need f or writers of spiritual truth to write straight/slant, she shares her own unexpected writing journey and her discovery of readers hungry for something different.
