51 Creatively Arranging Songs for Meaningful Worship Rienstra, Ron 1/13/2001 One of the worship leader's crucial tasks is arranging songs for worship. Sometimes that arranging takes place "in the moment" on Sunday; sometimes it's painstaki ngly hammered out in rehearsal. In this workshop we'll consider how to blend piano, guitars, percussion and orchestral instruments in ways that make the most of your worship team, attend to the shape and function of each song, and encourage congregationa l participation in the worship of God.

17149 Memoir is Cheaper than Therapy: Laughing at Your Life Riess, Jana 4/19/2012 Jana Riess
The act of writing a memoir is fraught with dilemmas about how much to reveal and how vulnerable to be. But in the end, the memoir’s combination of retro spection and introspection can be personally cathartic, even revelatory, especially if a memoirist’s writing stimulates relationships with kindred spirits.

183 Jefferson's Legacy: A Call to Civic Responsibility Rimel, Rebecca 1/24/2000 In 1948, when The Pew Charitable Trusts was established, grantmaking was closer to a personal act of charity. Today's world has greater needs, tougher problems and more comp etition for resources. Grantmaking, accordingly, is closer to a strategic investment with the return measured not in profits, but in long-lasting, positive and powerful results. One result the Trust seeks is the greater engagement of Americans in the civi c process of democracy. Rebecca Rimel is president and chief executive officer for The Pew Charitable Trusts. The Trusts, with more than $4.7 billion in assets, invested more than $213 million in 298 nonprofit organizations in 1998. Heritage Hall : Available for sale. Heritage Hall : Available for sale. He started a movement with churches and the police in South Boston that all but eliminated gang homicides there. 11749 On Christian Plilosophy in an Age of Terror Rivers, Eugene 1/19/2004 The 20th century stands out as a powerful empirical argument against the daringly original fantasy Europe remarkably referred to as the Enlightenment. Ironically, this era g ave birth to new visions of moral and political possibilities: total war, totalitarianism and the Holocaust. This madness presented a historic opportunity to advance an alternative vision of human rationality. We missed this opportunity. On September 11, 2001, unbelievable human tragedy gave way to an exceptional historic opportunity to bear witness to this age. Eugene Rivers, a nationally recognized inner-city pastor, will provide insight into this window of opportunity for Christian philosophers to intr oduce us to a new theory of politics and culture. Learning how to evaluate popular art does not have to ruin the fun and excitement people associate with g oing to the movies or a concert, watching TV or listening to music. A lot of the delight you can get from popular art can come from involvement as a Christian. This episode defines what culture means and demonstrates how the popular arts represent a cu ltural system. It shows how popular artworks are imaginative representations of life in God's world and looks at how artists communicate life visions in popular artworks.

When we encounter a popular artwork we are engaged, actively involved with the world the artist has created. That means we stand in judgement of the world the artist has made. If we are going to engage popular art as Christians, we have to be aware of our own worldview. This video turns central Biblical themes into cultural landscape, a "map of r eality" to use in navigating the world of American popular art and culture.

15024 Witness to Change: Profiling Microfinance and the Empowerment of Poor Families, A Rooy, Robert
Having worked as an assistant director on more than forty Hollywood productions, including Minority Report, Honeymoon in Vegas and the epic television series Lonesome Dove, Rooy now focuses his energy on creating media programs that engage and educate people about
important human issues. His company, Rooy Media LLC, has worked in more than twenty countries in partnership with such organizations as UNICEF, the Microcredit Summit Campaign, the Grameen Foundation and Rodale Institute. He is arguably one of the foremost chroniclers of microfinance, an innovative anti-poverty strategy that has helped millions of families escape poverty. To Our Credit, his seminal PBS documenta ry series featuring Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus, introduced many Americans to this ground-breaking idea. It
was the first of a dozen programs he has produced on the subject and the first of several collaborations with Dr. Yunus. Rooy, a f ormer president of Calvin Thespians, returns to his alma mater to share his journey of discovery, his belief in the power of people-centered development, and his commitment to using the powerful tool of film on behalf of the disenfranchised.

17102 Intelligent Design: Why it should NOT be Taught in HS Biology Class...and how to Debunk "Science = Atheism" Russell, Robert 7/13/2011 In his lecture, Dr. Russell will argue that ID is either interventionist theology or standard evolutionary biology. If the former, it should not be taught in public high sc hool biology courses. If the latter it is not an alternative to standard evolutionary biology and teaching it in public high school courses would be redundant. He will also discuss the socio-political agenda supporting ID at the Discovery Institute. He will unpack the claim often made in support of ID that standard evolutionary biology is inherently atheistic. Instead he will argue that the natural sciences are based on methodological naturalism, he will offer several reasons why methodological natural ism doesn't necessarily lead to metaphysical naturalism (atheism) and how it is actually rooted in the Christian doctrine of creation ex nihilo (out of nothing). He will list a variety of scientists and theologians who have developed a robust Christian i nterpretation of evolutionary biology known generally as "theistic evolution." Hence even if some voices claim that science supports atheism, it actually presupposes a theistic view of nature and should be welcomed by Christians as a way of und erstanding nature as God's creation.

14504 Imagine . . . What has Christ Done for Us? Ryan, Paul 1/25/2008 How do Christ’s life, death, and resurrection save us? What poetic imagination do we use to grasp his saving work? Scattered throughout our hymns, prayers, and liturgi es are metaphors used to comprehend and express Christ’s atonement. But so often we limit our experience to just one or two images. In this workshop we will survey five images of the atonement and explore how we might more fully celebrate how salvat ion comes through Jesus Christ. Campus Store (college) : Available for sale.

13654 What Really Happened in Worship in the Early Church? Rylaarsdam, David 1/27/2006 E13 Some of the worship practices of early Christians (100–400 A.D.) were strikingly different but perhaps more biblical than ours today. What did worship according to Scripture look like in the first Christian centuries? How did the type of water used in baptism or the shape of the font, for example, proclaim biblical teaching? What was the celebration of the Lord's Supper like? Why was a person's posture during praye r so important? [Note: this session is repeated from last year, when not everyone who wanted to attend could get in the room.] Bookstore (college) : Available for sale.
