What difference would alien intelligent life make to our Christology? After presenti ng a "mutuality" model for the relationship between theology and natural sciences (as developed in my 2003 book) I will explore these questions, using astrobiology and Christology as my example of mutuality.

12384 Jane Eyre Page, Michael 11/10/2004 When Jane Eyre was first published in 1847 it created a sensation: it was, one reviewer exclaimed, a book "to make the pusle gallop and the heart beat." And most would agree that it still does. Polly Teale's adaptation, made in 1998 for the London theatre company, Shared Experience, dramatically shows why.
It is more than just a transfer of the book to stage. Following the ground-breaking critical book, The Madwoman in the Attic, it presents Rochester's first wife, Bertha, as the passionate alter ego of Jane herself. The result is a powerful and original work of theatre which, through startling imagery and intense action, recreates the interior life of one o f the most beloved of all novels.

16357 Shadow of My Hand on the Paper: Writing and Living a Life, The Palmer, Parker 4/17/2010 May Sarton's poem, "Now I Become Myself," offers a vivid image of the hand that writes, shadowing the shape of the writer's life. Whether we write with pen and pap er or at a keyboard, we start with a blank page and fill it with words—just as we fill space and time with our lives. But are time, space, and blank pages really empty? Do we invent our writing and our living? Or do we discover hidden realities with every word and act? Parker Palmer describes how writing is, for him, discovery and invention, just as living is—done in fear and trembling, faith and hope. Festival Faith & Writing Ofc. : Available with permission.

14513 Redeeming the Time: Homiletic Theology for a Pilgrim People Pasquarello II, Michael 1/25/2008 This workshop will focus on the formative power of the Lectionary when it is read within the theological narrative of the Christian year: the story of salvation. Rather than discussing the use of the Lectionary as an end in itself, or in the abstract, we will think of preaching as a means of leading and forming a pilgrim people across time on their journey to the City of God. 14480 We Speak Because We Have Been Spoken: A "Grammar" of the Preaching Life Pasquarello II, Michael; Hoezee, Scott 1/24/2008 [incomplete recording] Despite the increased interest in spirituality, little attention has been given to the spiritual and moral formation of the preacher by the church dur ing modernity. This workshop is for preachers who know that the vocation of preacher cannot be reduced to a theologically neutral or technical means of communication, but requires that the person and work of the preacher be conformed to the "Word mad e flesh", God’s self-communication who is the source and goal of all human speakers and speaking. We will look at the wisdom of Scripture and historical exemplars from the Christian tradition to help us better understand the "grammar of th e preaching life." 16962 Race, Poverty, and "Choice" Politics Patillo, Mary 11/2/2011 The department of sociology and social work presents Dr. Mary Pattillo, Harold Washington Professor of Sociology and African American Studies at Northwestern University in C hicago, who will lecture on “Race, Poverty and ‘Choice’ Policies” in the Commons Lecture Hall.
‘Choice’ has become the buzz word across the policy spectrum, and especially in housing, schools, and health care. Richar d Thaler and Cass Sunstein’s book Nudge lays out a case for “nudging” people toward choices that are in their best interest, but does not address inequalities that inevitably arise when relying on a choice framework. This talk questions the assumptions, ideology and philosophy that undergirds ‘choice,’ and presents preliminary data from two small qualitative studies – one on parents ‘choosing’ high schools for their children and the other on individuals usin g a Housing Choice Voucher to search for an apartment. Findings show that 1) many on the receiving end of these policies aren’t even aware that they have a choice, 2) there are socioeconomic differences in who chooses, racial inequalities are not ov ercome by such policies, and 3) there is a misalignment in what policy makers and the targets of these policies deem important.

Professor Pattillo's areas of interest include race and ethnicity (specifically the black middle class), urban sociology , and qualitative methods. Professor Pattillo uses the city of Chicago as her laboratory and strives to be an expert in Chicago history, politics, and social life. In her book, Black Picket Fences: Privilege and Peril Among the Black Middle Class (Univers ity of Chicago Press, 1999), Pattillo investigates the economic, spatial, and cultural forces that affect child-rearing and youth socialization in a black middle class neighborhood on Chicago's South Side. Black Picket Fences won the Oliver Cromwell Cox B est Book Award from the American Sociological Association. She is also author of Black on the Block: The Politics of Race and Class in the City and Imprisoning America: The Social Effects of Mass Incarceration. Current research projects include a study of how parents negotiate school choice and how families make housing choices in Chicago. Pattillo is also a member of the MacArthur Foundation-funded Research Network on How Housing Matters for Families and Children.

11534 1963 March on Washington Pauley, Garth
#411 1963 MARCH ON WASHINGTON
The March for Jobs and Freedom in 1963 was the biggest March on Washington up to that point--a dream that came true only through much planni ng, hard work, and compromise. Was the compromise worth the achievement? Civil rights rhetoric scholar Garth Pauley from Calvin's Communication Arts & Sciences department tells host Karen Saupe how this momentous event was accomplished and how the dif ferent planners measured its success.

13640 Writing Sermons in an Oral Style Pauley, Garth 1/27/2006 C15 The rhetorician James A. Winans once wrote, "A speech is not merely an essay standing on its hind legs." Yet many speakers, including preachers, write their me ssages in a style better suited for reading rather than hearing. To be an effective oral communicator, one must learn to write for the ear, not the eye. Bookstore (college) : Available for sale.

Pedulla, Albert 4/1/2005 Not only is there a theological rationale for Christians to engage in the arts and music, but there is a Biblical mandate. In this session Pedulla invites participants to co nsider the innate human need for symbols, stories and the arts by exploring a basic theology of the arts and how the scriptures show us that we need art not only to be whole, but to understand the fullness of God's character. Participants will also listen to a couple great rock and roll tunes that might have something to say to us (and that Pedulla thinks God might like). Bookstore (college) : Available for sale.

11880 Engaging With God: Thinking Worship from a Biblical-Theological Perspective Peterson, David 1/29/2004 Many of our discussions about worship are focused on the form and content of church services, without reference to the wider perspective of Scripture. In practice we narrow our definition of worship to prayer and praise and forget about the big picture: the fulfillment of Old Testament ideals in the person and work of Christ, making it possible for us to serve and honor God in the context of everyday life. In effect, the gos pel is all about right worship! To get the most out of this seminar, you are encouraged to read/bring his book Engaging with God: A Biblical Theology of Worship (IVP, 2002). 14597 Standing to Forgive, The Pettigrove, Glen A. 2/26/2008 Dr. Pettigrove is a Lecturer at the Massey University School of History, Philosophy and Classics in New Zealand. He completed his doctorate at the University of California, Riverside, and his M.Div. at Gordon-Conwell Seminary. His areas of specialization are in Ethics and Social & Political Philosophy. In his writing, he has explored the ethics of forgiveness. He is interested in the recent extension of the language of a pology and forgiveness from interpersonal contexts to relations between collective agents. Calls for nations and corporations to apologize and make reparations for decades-old, sometimes centuries-old deeds reveal interesting changes in contemporary under standings both of legitimate political action and of moral responsibility more generally. Dr. Pettigrove believes that the broad implications of these changes for political theory and for public policy make the need for a careful study of political forgiv eness pressing. 17092 Always With Us? The Movement to End Homelessness in the U.S Pitkin, Bill 4/13/2011 Homelessness is the most extreme manifestation of poverty in our society and is often treated as an inevitable, intractable feature of urban life in the U.S. Over the past decade, however, a conviction has developed that it is possible to end, not just manage, homelessness. Hundreds of cities across the nation have developed Plans to End Homelessness and in 2010 the Federal government for the first time released a plan to end homelessness in the country.
In this lecture, Bill Pitkin, Ph.D., Director of Domestic
Programs for the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation, will outline the current dynamics and trends of homelessness and major policy and programmatic shifts in add ressing homelessness in recent years. He will cover national trends but also focus on the case of Los Angeles, the so-called "homelessness capital of the nation." Presented from the perspective and experience of one of the largest philanthropic institutions in the U.S. working to end homelessness, the talk will provide lessons learned for effective public-private-nonprofit
partnerships.

16977 What is Christian Philosophy? Plantinga, Alvin 11/17/2011 The first occupant of the Jellema Chair in Christian Philosophy is a person who has shaped the contours and priorities of Christian philosophy as much as anyone now living: Alvin Plantinga, former Calvin prof, retired Notre Dame prof, and now a member of the Calvin College Philosophy Department once again. In this lecture you will hear Al's reflections on how attending a few of William Harry Jellema's classes persuaded him t o transfer from Harvard to Calvin, what historical movements shape philosophy today, and what important tasks lie ahead. 16937 Christian, Evolutionist, or Both? Plantinga, Alvin
IC1201
Some scientific theories seem to matter a lot more to people than others. The theory of evolution has always gotten plenty of attention, especially from those who treasure the scriptural book of Genesis. Alvin Plantinga, emeriti professor from the Notre Dame philosophy department, describes some of the main controversies between of evolution, intelligent design, and creationism and whether Christians can reconcile some of these differences. Shirley Hoogstra hosts.

180 Faith and Science Plantinga, Alvin 1/18/2000 While modern empirical science arose within the bosom of the Christian faith, the relationship between Christianity and science has been marked by as much conflict as concor d. At times, what is proposed as serious science seems to be flatly inconsistent with the Christian faith. This lecture looks into this type of conflict and Dr. Plantinga argues that typically these conflicts ought not to occasion fear and trepidation on the part of Christians. Dr. Plantinga is a founding member of the Society of Christian Philosophers. He taught philosophy at Calvin College for 19 years. In 1982, he was appointed to the John O'Brien Professor of Philosophy and Director for Philosophy of Religion at the University of Notre Dame. Heritage Hall : Available for sale. 11753 How the Middle Class Remade Music Plantinga, Leon 1/23/2004 The fabled growth of the middle class in Europe in the later 18th century produced profound changes. Among them was a striking transformation in musical style. Radically dif ferent was the early 18th century career of J.S. Bach from his son’s in the latter part of the decade. The father was entirely dependent upon employment with the patronage system at court or church, while Johann Christian Bach addressed his effort, through opera, concerts and music publication, to an urban public, largely comprised of the new middle class. Leon Plantinga, Henry L. and Lucy G. Moses Professor of Music at Yale University, will demonstrate this complete metamorphosis in musical style t hrough recorded examples and live performance that should not be missed. 17402 Justice as a Virtue Porter, Jean 4/4/2012 In these lectures, Prof. Porter explores the idea that justice is a virtue, following along the lines set by Aquinas's discussion of the cardinal virtue of justice in the Su mma Theologiae, but also going beyond what he says through focused engagement with recent theories of justice, in both communal and personal/relational contexts, reflects a rational appropriation of the natural forms of life proper to us as social animals . In more contemporary terms, one
might say that justice is fundamentally grounded in the good rather than the right. Yet Aquinas also says that the right is the object of the virtue of justice, and this suggests that the good as he understands it is in no way incompatible with acknowledging individual claims to self-determination and fundamental forms of respect and forbearance.
Prof. Porter's research interests lie primarily in the areas of foundational moral theology and the history of Christia n thought, especially in the scholastic period. Her most recent publications include Nature as Reason: A Thomistic Theory of Natural Law (Eerdmans, 2005), which develops a contemporary theological accound of natural law, and Ministers of the Law: A Natura l Law of Legal Authority (Eerdmans. 2010), which offers a theory of positive law based on the theory of natural law developed in Nature as Reason. In addition, she is the author of three other books and over thirty scholarly articles in refereed journals or as chapters of books. In 1997, she received a prestigious Luce
Fellowship in Theology, and in 2005 she served as the President of the Society of Christian Ethics.
