Two prolific essayists discuss their ardent commitment to the form that steals and stashes everything it touches, including (naturally) all the best features of the other genres. 13936 Making Choices: The Dutch Resistance During World War II Eman, Diet; Muller, John; Timmer, John; Witte, John 4/1/2005 The producer of this widescreen DVD explores the dramatic lives of four Dutch Americans of west Michigan who resisted the seemingly overwhelming power of the Nazis during th e occupation of the Netherlands (1940-1945). The documentary tells their stories of fear and courage, danger and faith, despair and trust in their Lord as they hid Jews and other fellow citizens on the run, and outwitted the Nazis. They candidly reveal wh at motivated them to risk everything to protect total strangers and the heavy price they paid for resisting Hitler and his henchmen. The story of one of the participants, Diet Eman, earlier was the subject of the book, 'Things We Couldn’t Say.' The others are John Muller, John Timmer and John Witte. Producer/Director Robert Prince, a Western Michigan native of Dutch origin, teaches journalism at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks. Running time 57 minutes.

Dr. Schaap is chairman of the Water Board, Groot Salland, The Netherlands, Chairman of the Federation of Dutch Water Boards and Member of the Dutch Parliament. He is a leading expert on water management issues in the Netherlands.

#516 THE MEANING OF EASTER
Easter Sunday claims the year’s highest attendance at most churches. Why doesn’t the miraculous story of Christ’s resurrecti on and its implications bring everyone back for more the following week? Fleming Rutledge, parish priest and speaker, discusses with host Shirley Hoogstra the difference “full-throttle belief” in the resurrection would make.

#615 MEDIA MONOPOLIES Originally broadcast Feb. 19, 2006
In the U.S., anyone with the money can buy a TV station and broadcast their views to the country. This rare freed om may actually be stealing freedom from viewers, argues Tim Dean, formerly of the British Broadcasting Corporation and currently director of the World Media Trust. Why not require fair reporting so that viewers are given the freedom to judge for themselv es, he asks host Karen Saupe?

#114 MIXING RELIGION AND POLITICS Should religious people be asked to ignore their worldview when it comes to politics, while everyone else is welcome to promote theirs? Th is is hardly fair. But neither is it fair to wield without caution the influence that religion can have. We consider the contributions religious people should and should not make to the public sphere with guest Stephen Carter, law professor at Yale Univer sity and author of God's Name in Vain: The Wrongs and Rights of Religion in Politics.

11741 Moral Crisis of the Telecosm, The Gilder, George 1/7/2004 The many telecom bankruptcies of the last two years are often ascribed to greed and graft. Yet many of the leaders of the industry, such as Bernie Ebbers of WorldCom, are ac tive and devout Christians. Are they hypocrites? Or is the story of the recent crash far more complex and intriguing than the press and courts have revealed? George Gilder, chairman of Gilder Publishing, LLC, editor of the Gilder Technology Report and aut hor of several books including the bestseller Wealth and Poverty, addresses the moral sources of the telecom crash and the new telecosmic revival now under way. In his futuristic thinking about technology, he draws together science, business history, soci al analysis and prediction to make sense of the titanic changes afoot in our lives. But there’s a third kind of injury that results when soldiers en gage in actions that violate their own moral principles; it’s known as “moral injury.” Herman Keizer, chaplain for the U.S. Army for over 40 years, tells about a movement seeking to change how the military regards and addresses injuries to the conscience. 16072 Moral Rehabilitation in an Immoral Environment Cain, Burl 1/12/2010 Prison Warden of the Louisiana State Penitentiary. His steadfast rejection of a “lock ‘em up and throw away the key” mentality can be seen in the progressi ve, compassionate programs and sound correctional procedures he has implemented. The hallmark of his remarkable administration is his relentless efforts to help each inmate discover value and purpose in his life, to experience true freedom of the soul. Hi s story is a story of hope and transformation in America’s bloodiest prison. He is the subject of the book Cain’s Redemption. Heuertz has spent his life bearing witness to hope-the possibility of hope in a good God in a world tha t has legitimate reasons to question God's goodness. Chris, and his wife Phileena, may call Omaha, Nebraska home but together they have traveled to nearly 70 countries. Since 1996, Chris has served as the International Executive Director of Word Made Fles h and continues to live out the vision of the organization by working with and investing in the most vulnerable of the world's poor. It is in these experiences that he finds the inspiration for public speaking and books such as Simple Spirituality: Learn ing to see God in a Broken World and Friendship at the Margins: Discovering Mutuality in Service and Mission. 178 Music of God and the God of Music, The Begbie, Jeremy 1/14/2000 What has music to do with God? Why do so many people turn to music for "spiritual" refreshment, using music from New Age to trip-hop to medieval chant? This presen tation explores some of the ways in which music works in our lives and offers reasons why music so often brings people closer to God. Slides, recorded music and demonstrations at the piano assist in answering the question of what music has to do with God. Jeremy Begbie is a widely published author, a noted performer of Mozart and is Vice Principal of Ridley Hall, Cambridge, England, and Lecturer of the Faculty of Divinity, Cambridge University. 11743 Music, Emotion, and Worship: Is There Anything to Fear? Begbie, Jeremy 1/9/2004 In today’s culture, more than ever before, music is used to move us emotionally - on TV and in movies, shopping malls and restaurants. From the ancient Greeks to the r ecent Taliban regime, many have feared this profound power of music. In the Christian Church the anxiety has often been intense, especially in worship where music plays such a prominent role, and where some suspect they are being manipulated. Using perfor mance, slides and recorded music, Jeremy Begbie, noted author, professor and associate director of the Institute for Theology, Imagination and the Arts at St. Mary’s College of St. Andrews University in Scotland, asks, “In worship, what, if an ything, have we to fear from music’s emotional power?” Heritage Hall : Archive/Available for Research Heritage Hall : Archive/Available for Research January Series, 2004

14115 Musical Arranging for God's Glory Kauflin, Bob; Scheer, Greg 1/25/2007 While there are a number of reasons for instruments in the church, their primary function is to support and lead faith-filled congregational singing. However, there are ques tions about instrumentation that every wise musician and leader should consider. How many instruments do we use? What kind? Should we use the same instruments every week? Should we play songs the same way each time we sing them? What are the relative bene fits of repetition and varied musical expression? What is the place of spontaneous arranging in the worship of God? Is it possible for a song to be over-arranged? What factors affect how instrumentation can support the truths being sung? These are some of the questions that will be discussed during this day-long seminar, designed for instrumentalists, service planners, pastors, and music leaders. Bob will demonstrate many of the principles he covers, suggest helpful resources, and provide time for questio ns.
Note: only the second half of the seminar was recorded.
