16025 Theology of the Body: Love, Happiness and Sex, A Kaczor, Christopher 10/8/2009 Pope John Paul ll’s reflections on the body and sex, known as the Theology of the Body, explore the thesis that "The body, and it alone, is capable of making visi ble what is invisible: the spiritual and the divine. It was created to transfer into the visible reality of the world, the mystery hidden since time immemorial in God, and thus to be a sign of it."
Theology of the Body has been described as " one of the boldest reconfigurations of Catholic theology in centuries."
Christopher Kaczor is Associate Professor of Philosophy at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. He is the author of numerous books on issues of ethics, philosophy and r eligion.

16374 Editing a Manuscript and Working with Its Author Kamlani, Beena 4/17/2010 If editing a manuscript can be equated to writing on an author’s skin—as Sam Vaughan, a legendary editor, famously said—then the art of editing is nothing less than a journey into the heart of a work, and therefore, to the heart of the writer. Editing consists of many functions, and Beena Kamlani explores as many of them as time allows, with particular attention to the process of writing itself. Heritage Hall : Archive/Available for Research
Festival of Faith & Writing, 2010
16360 Editing, Reading, Writing, Brooding: The Role of Meditation in Creativity Kamlani, Beena 4/17/2010 This session centers on how editors come to the deep understanding of what isn’t working in a manuscript and how it can be fixed; how readers realize that what they 217;re reading can become a primer for life; how writers see in a flash what’s wrong with their draft of a work and what they must do about it—in other words, how the art of brooding affects the lifeblood of creativity. Citing many writers who considered themselves expert brooders—Proust, Chekhov, Cheever, Balzac, Bellow, among many others—Beena Kamlani looks at how brooding is indispensable to the imagination and the senses and, therefore, to writing and editing. 14143 Role of Music in Worshipping God, The Kauflin, Bob 1/26/2007 How should music function when we gather to worship God? Not knowing the answer to that question has caused conflicts in churches throughout the world. In our music-addicted culture, music can easily become an object of worship itself. Others have reacted to that tendency and have greatly restricted the place of music in the church. This workshop will discuss how to use music in a way that truly honors God. A case will be ma de for music that is skillfully played, with variety, complementary to the lyrics, and submitted to serving God's people rather than the musician's ego. 14115 Musical Arranging for God's Glory Kauflin, Bob; Scheer, Greg 1/25/2007 While there are a number of reasons for instruments in the church, their primary function is to support and lead faith-filled congregational singing. However, there are ques tions about instrumentation that every wise musician and leader should consider. How many instruments do we use? What kind? Should we use the same instruments every week? Should we play songs the same way each time we sing them? What are the relative bene fits of repetition and varied musical expression? What is the place of spontaneous arranging in the worship of God? Is it possible for a song to be over-arranged? What factors affect how instrumentation can support the truths being sung? These are some of the questions that will be discussed during this day-long seminar, designed for instrumentalists, service planners, pastors, and music leaders. Bob will demonstrate many of the principles he covers, suggest helpful resources, and provide time for questio ns.
Note: only the second half of the seminar was recorded.

Keeley, Laura; Keeley, Robert; Vanderwell, Howard 1/25/2013 Many churches today are eager to present themselves as "intergenerational" in their worship. In a society that so easily separates people by age, developmental lev el, and experience, can the church succeed in keeping the generations together? Is this idea new and novel, or old and tested? What are the considerations and issues we'll have to deal with? How do we accommodate different rates of faith development? Wha t are the benefits of succeeding? 13676 Reformed in Reformed Worship, The Kelderman, Duane; Sibley, Larry; Smit, Laura; Nyomi, Setri; Witvliet, John D. 1/27/2006 In the context of this very ecumenical conference, this session explores what it means to live and worship within a particular tradition. How can we practice worship in whic h our Christian identity is always more important than our particular tradition, while being grateful for our own heritage and at the same time gratefully receive the spiritual gifts that come to us with other accents? This session explores the very diffe rent answers often given to the question 'What does it mean to be Reformed?' The session is also very appropriate for Christians of any tradition who are interested in exploring how to best represent their own tradition. Bookstore (college) : Available for sale.

15196 Government Inspector, The Kelly, Kirsten 2/18/2009 Calvin College student and alumni performed an adaptation of Gogol's: The Government Inspector, a witty, imaginative and wildly satirical play which exposes societal corrupt ion with biting hilarity. Gogol's masterpiece created such a furor when it was first performed in 1836 that the playwright was driven into exile. Gogol's comic fantasy is a celebration of the grotesque and absurd elements in human nature and remains one of the great comedies of all time.

10731 Is America Hated? Khouri, Rami 4/3/2002 #217 IS AMERICA HATED? In September 2002, many Americans were surprised to hear that people in other parts of the world hate America. Why did this come as such a shock? Sho uld our media have spent more time looking at the international picture and how we fit in? Do we have too little interest in the world outside our borders? Rami Khouri of the Jordan Times newspaper describes how America is perceived around the globe.

Joe Kickasola focuses on some of the many ways in which film generates feelings and how those feelings, in the right contexts, are supremely important for our understanding of spiritual truth. The average American is exposed to more than 3,000 ads a day all of which encourage us to develop a relations hip with things. Whether it’s the ice cream that comforts us, the nail polish that makes us feel wild or the car that carries us away from it all, products promise that they can be trusted when people let us down. But the assurance of advertising le aves us hungry and unsatisfied because the products we love can’t love us back. Jean Kilbourne, internationally recognized for her pioneering work on advertising and author of Can’t Buy My Love: How Advertising Changes the Way We Think and Fee l, paints a gripping portrait of how this barrage of advertising corrupts relationships and feeds an addictive mentality.

Heritage Hall : Archive/Available for Research
16675 Fundamentalism in Late Antiquity? The Christianity of Epiphanius of Cyprus Kim, Young 10/18/2010 Epiphanius was metropolitan bishop of Cyprus in the late fourth century, an era characterized by intense theological disputes and struggles for ecclesiastical authority. He was the author of the Panarion, a lengthy heresiology which compiled information on the beliefs, practices, and corresponding refutations of eighty different heresies. A careful reading of this text reveals his fundamental belief that (Neo-)Nicene Christi anity was the only true "orthodox" expression of the faith. For Epiphanius, this version of Christianity defined and informed every facet of life, including his understanding of human history, culture, and empire, and he condemned as heretics an yone who distorted or opposed his views. Such convictions bear striking "family resemblances" to fundamentalism in modern religions...so can we then conceive of a "fundamentalist" ancient Christianity? The lecture explores this possibi lity through the lens of the life, work, and thought of Epiphanius. Campus Store (college) : Available for sale.

14038 Is There Purpose in the Living World? Some Thoughts about Creation and Emergent Evolution Klapwijk, Jaap 9/15/2006 Jaap Klapwijk is from the Free University in Amsterdam.
"I feel it is objectionable to say that God created through evolution, but we can say that God created a world that is characterized by evolution. In such an evolutionary world, full of chance variations and natural selection, is there place for a purpose? Evolution implies an element of continuity and of discontinuity. To understand this, the notion of e mergent evolution is helpful. In an evolutionary development there is not just a continuous line. Phenomena with an element of discontinuity and irreducible newness can emerge. Life, for instance, is a phenomenon that emerges at a new organizational lev el: a biotic level. But in the living world we can also speak of a vegetative, a sensitive and a mental level. These levels are idionomous, i.e. each is governed by special laws that, in some way, represent God's creation ordinances. Evolution is not w ithout chance and randomness. But in so far as it is embedded in a hierarchy of organizational levels and oriented to divine laws it is directional, and we might speak of purpose in the living world."

16963 Artifice of Eternity: Notes Toward a Christian Poetics Klatt, Lew 11/8/2011 In an America that loves to hear itself talk—talk radio, talk shows, talking points, pillow talk, even God-talk—all of us suffer from language fatigue. It is the task of the poet—and the faithful human—to resuscitate the ways we speak. But what will we say? And how will we say it?

Looking at writers T. S. Eliot, C. S. Lewis, and others, this lecture will attempt to articulate a Christian poetic s. It will do so by delving into the attribute of beauty so often cited as a touchstone for a Reformed renovation of the literary arts. It will also explore the ways in which a poet, aiming for the beautiful while embracing a cosmos that is disfigured, mu st infuse her art with mystery, radiance, and what artist Makoto Fujimura calls “the aroma of the new.”

11751 'Genetic' Predestination? Knoppers, Bartha 1/21/2004 Intimately linked, as it is to market forces and investment, the hype and hope surrounding genetic research focuses on the determining power of the gene. This spills over in to the information provided to patients and recipients and influences ethical frameworks and evaluation. Genetic determinism is shaping socio-ethnic policies and legislation around the world. But is that determining power omnipotent? Or are there other fa ctors and influences that need to be considered? Named Scientist of the Year in 1996 by Radio-Canada, Bartha Knoppers, a law professor and bioethicist at the University of Montreal, will discuss the trends, the models for policymaking and whether any mode l can be as epigenetic and dynamic as the human person. 17382 Child Slavery in Ghana Kofi-Annan, James 2/6/2012 At the age of 6, James Kofi-Annan was sold into slavery for $15. He spent the next 7 years of his life terrified and abused through 17 hour work days on a fishing vessel, en slaved in the jobs that no other man would do. But his story did not end in bondage as Annan escaped from his oppressors at the age of 13. After his liberation, Annan could neither read nor write, but was committed to receiving the basic education he had so long been denied. After pushing himself through an accelerated primary and secondary school education, Annan worked in the private sector for Barclays Bank of Ghana and later founded the antislavery organization, Challenging Heights. Since 2007 this or ganization has worked to release over 200 child slaves, and supports the development of 10,000 at-risk children in Ghana. Annan has been a renowned speaker of TED, CNN and MTV. He is also the recipient of many awards for his unbridled humanitarian work an d diligence in ending the assault on human rights that is child slavery. Campus Store (college) : Available for sale.

14623 Religious Tolerance -- Love Your Neighbor Koldenhoven, Dean 3/31/2008 The annual Paul Henry Lecture, featuring Dean Koldenhoven, former mayor of Palos Heights, Illinois and 2002 recipient of the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award will be at 7:30 p.m. on March 31, 2008 in the Prince Conference Center on the Calvin College Campus. Mr. Koldenhoven will speak on "Political Tolerance -- Love Your Neighbor."

In 2000, plans to purchase a vacant Christian church and open a mosqu e in the Chicago suburb of Palos Heights were met with extensive opposition from the community and city council. Mayor Koldenhoven took a stand within his community in support of the Al Salam Mosque Foundation, condemning bigotry and religious intolerance toward the Islamic community. He was subsequently defeated in his bid for relection in 2001.

In 2002, Koldenhoven received the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award for political courage and public service. When asked how he decided to take his controversial stand in the community, Koldenhoven replied "I learned in grammar school about the First Amendment in which the first part of it says, "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free ex ercise thereof" and Jesus command in the Bible when he says to "love your neighbor." The decision was easy."

A reception will immediately follow the lecture in the Fireside Room at the Prince Conference Center. The lecture is fr ee and open to the public.

We see the “seven deadly sins” in board games and fashion magazines, but for many people, their purpose now and over the centuries has been to direct o ur hearts toward the things we all long for—love, integrity, and freedom. 16714 Leading with Light: Using Video Projectors Wisely Koster, Steven 1/28/2011 What is the screen supposed to do? How do you create media that fits what worship is all about? Using illustrations, techniques, and tools from the field we’ll explor e models for using the screen and a process for creating media that helps lead worship rather than distract from it.

14144 Leading with Light: Using Video Projectors Wisely Koster, Steven 1/26/2007 How should music function when we gather to worship God? Not knowing the answer to that question has caused conflicts in churches throughout the world. In our music-addicted culture, music can easily become an object of worship itself. Others have reacted to that tendency and have greatly restricted the place of music in the church. This workshop will discuss how to use music in a way that truly honors God. A case will be ma de for music that is skillfully played, with variety, complementary to the lyrics, and submitted to serving God's people rather than the musician's ego.

3290 Amazing Grace: The Lives of Children and the Conscience of a Nation Kozol, Jonathan 1/22/1997 Jonathan Kozol has spent much of his life talking and listening to children and giving voice to their struggles and hardships through his writing. His first book, Death at an Early Age, a description of his fourth-grade teaching experience in a segregated Boston classroom, was published in 1967 and received the National Book Award in Science, Philosophy, and Religion. In his latest book, Amazing Grace: The Lives of Children and the Conscience of a Nation, Dr. Kozol writes with compelling sensitivity about the children and their families who live in the South Bronx, the poorest congressional district of our nation, and how they find the strength to prevail in the face of vio lence, poverty, and racial isolation. 10801 Axis of History, The: The Middle East After September 11 Krauthammer, Charles 1/27/2003 For the last 500 years the cockpit of world history has been Europe. Not anymore; today it is the Near East. War in Afghanistan, rumors of war in Iraq, conflict between Isra el and the Palestinians will determine the course of the great issues of our time: terrorism, energy supplies, the spread of democracy, prospects for peace. Charles Krauthammer, a Pulitzer Prize winning syndicated columnist and a regular weekly panelist o n Inside Washington, contends that September 11 woke us from a decade-long holiday from history, during which time we conducted a bubble diplomacy to parallel our bubble economy. The bubble burst on September 11, 2001. There is now a new world to build. Bookstore (college) : Available for sale. Heritage Hall : Archive/Available for Research January Series, 2003

Especially since the scriptures that Christians inherited from the Jews were already so full of interpretation and commentary!
