Your Calvin adventure starts right here. Calvin’s Access program is all about setting you up for success. By giving you some important tools early in your college experience, you’ll be able to excel toward graduation. We’ve helped many students launch their Calvin experience, and our unique formula leads to great results.
At orientation, you’ll meet with a knowledgeable advisor who knows the Calvin experience and curriculum up and down. They’ll listen to your story, help you select courses and craft a first-year plan. Your advisor becomes a connection for you to celebrate your success and navigate challenges as you transition to Calvin.
As an Access scholar, you’ll take Strategies for Academic Success paired with a core course; each course plays off the other. Gifted Calvin professors teach each course with practical skills laced throughout. We customize a schedule for you that can include our innovative math and written rhetoric options. Your schedule will be based on your major (if you have one), past experience, and placement testing.
You can navigate your college transition with real experts on college life—fellow Calvin students who will act as peer coaches. Calvin also abounds in practical academic resources, like a Rhetoric Center to help with writing, homework help sessions across many courses and a gifted library staff to help with research.
Students are admitted to Calvin as Access Scholars through a decision of the committee on admissions or through connection with the director of the Access program. The committee on admission identifies students who show promise to flourish at Calvin but who have not fully met Calvin’s admission requirements to participate. Students admitted as to the program by the committee are required to participate as a condition of their admission. Other students identify the supports the program offers as key to their college transition and choose to take part.
Student who are not admitted as Access Scholars but do not fully meet Calvin’s admission requirements can be admitted with conditions in Math, English or both.
Access Scholars and conditionally admitted students take placement tests during the summer before their first year at Calvin to determine the most appropriate curriculum.
Math – The math readiness assessment measures a students readiness for college level math and math related courses. Students are placed in ASC 004, 005 or a core math course.
Written Rhetoric – The written rhetoric self-assessment guides students to make an educated decision on the best writing track for them to complete. Students can select into the English 101 or the English 100/102 track.
Academic success classes
Top Access Scholars can apply for the June Antuma DeBoer Scholarship. June DeBoer joined Calvin College in 2001 as a coordinator for students with disabilities. In 2010 she was promoted to associate director of academic services, and in that position also served as the director of the Access program. June was a passionate advocate for the students with whom she worked. As a teacher and academic counselor, she worked tirelessly to help students discover and realize their potential, celebrating each success with joy and encouragement.
At her request and to honor her legacy, her husband Nick and their children, Jonathan and Jenna, have established this scholarship to preserve June’s memory through the lives of hardworking students who have participated in the Access program at Calvin College. A $2,500 scholarship is available to a qualified student for their second year.
