Although interviews often cover a wide variety of questions, most of the questions tend to fall into three primary areas:

  • Strengths: Will you be good at the job? Are you qualified?
  • Fit: Will you be good for us? Can we work and get along with you?
  • Motivation: Will this be good for you? Will you like the job?

Use these handouts to prepare to speak about your strengths, fit and motivation and present yourself effectively in an interview:

Researching a company or organization is essential to an effective interview. Employers appreciate candidates who can demonstrate an understanding and enthusiasm for the company. Do your research before the interview.

Practice interviews:

Would you ever compete in a sports event without practicing? Why compete for a job without honing your interview skills? Our office offers free practice interviews with a career coach. Call (616) 526-6485, stop by to set up your practice interview, or schedule an appointment through Handshake. You'll be asked to dress as you would for a real interview.

On-campus interviews:

Keep an eye on your email, student-news and Handshake for employers visiting campus to conduct on-campus interviews.

If you sign up for an interview, you must adhere to the following cancellation policy: Cancellations of an interview must be made no later than 4 p.m. the day before the interview. If you cancel after this time, or if you don’t show up, career center services will be revoked, and you will be required to write a letter of apology to the recruiter, to be mailed through our office. At that time you can schedule an appointment with the director of the Career Center to explain the reason for not keeping your interview, after which these privileges may be reinstated.
