Speech Clinic Information

Adult Services

The Speech & Hearing clinic at Calvin University offers services for adults with speech, language and/or cognitive challenges secondary to a stroke or traumatic brain injury. We provide these services on-campus during the fall, spring, and summer semesters.

Pediatric Services

We provide speech-language pathology services for children with a variety of diagnoses, including delayed language, phonological/articulation impairments, autism spectrum disorders, fluency disorders, and other communication needs. The speech-language evaluation includes hearing screening.

Our on-campus speech clinic provides sessions during the fall, spring and summer semesters. Each client receives therapy services by a graduate student clinician under close professional supervision by a certified Speech-Language Pathologist. Treatment includes an evaluation, treatment plan, and progress report, focusing on the development of functional communication skills. Clients receive a one-hour time slot and meet weekly at the same time with the same student.

Pediatric Occupational Therapy is another service that is offered at our on-campus clinic during the fall semester and late spring.  This service is a collaboration with Western Michigan University.  Families have the option of enrolling their child for only O.T., or for integrative speech and O.T. services.  Please contact us for dates and times.

If you are interested in utilizing any services at our Calvin Speech & Hearing clinic, you may contact us, or submit one of our registration case history forms. We accept applications for Speech services year-round, as we can either refer clients to the Calvin Rehabilitation Services or add to our On-Campus wait list. Registration is on a rolling basis which means we continue to accept applications to fill any ongoing openings.

Calvin Rehabilitation Clinics offer two clinic locations providing a continuum of care for our clients. There may be instances where a client will be better served at one of our locations and the clinic director will recommend particular placement or a transfer of services.

Speech Clinic Policies

Video Observation & Retention Policy

The Calvin Speech & Hearing Clinic combines quality rehabilitative care with exceptional clinical training. A critical component of both goals is the use of video observation and recording.

These records are for educational purposes only and will not become part of my medical record. They will be securely retained and destroyed as outlined in the Calvin Speech Clinic Video Observation & Retention Policy. These recordings are required to participate in the Calvin Speech Clinic.

Attendance Policy

Weekly attendance is important for successful treatment for the client as well as weekly clinical experience for the student. The policy for the clinic is that an absence of 3 or more sessions in a semester (or 2 during a shorter summer semester) may result in losing one’s time slot. If the client has reached two no-shows or late cancellations in a 3-month period, the therapist shall remind you or your responsible family member of the Policy and the consequences of one more incident within the allotted time period.

If the client does reach the third no-show or late cancellation within a semester session (two during summer sessions), the staff will notify the client or responsible family member that the client will be placed on the waiting list for future speech clinic sessions.

Clinic appointments are important. Please arrive on time for your session. Caregivers are expected to return to receive report from the clinician at 45 minutes after the hour.

Admission Procedures

The clinic schedule is set during the transition periods between semester sessions. Decisions on applicants and placement are based on a variety of factors. Participation in one session of clinic does not guarantee a time-slot for the next session.

Calvin Rehabilitation Clinics offer two clinic locations providing a continuum of care for our clients. There may be instances where a client will be better served at one of our locations and the clinic director will recommend a transfer of services.

Donation-Based Clinic

Due to insurance regulations, this clinic is not able to charge set fees for professional services, but we do ask, if possible, that you invest in your treatment by supporting the speech clinic with a donation.
