Home Free

Home Free started small with their a cappella group, but after finding their niche and proving their skill, they have become widely known for the music they make. The five men who make up the band Home Free are not all originals, but each brought his own aesthetic that made the group what it is now. They started out doing a wide variety of music, but when the band pulled together the current members, their focus became country music as a result of the backgrounds of the new members. Together, they crafted their music to fit into the country genre, and through that they stood out among other a cappella groups. In addition to finding a core audience, finding their place within a cappella music helped them to be noticed by The Sing Off, a nationwide competition for a cappella groups. Because of their talent and skill in their craft, the band won the fourth season of the show, winning them a record deal and broader recognition.

Although they write only a few of their own songs, they use mu sic by other artists and make them their own. Often they use a variety of songs across different genres, such as All About that Bass, Story of my Life, Bye Bye Bye, and Ring of Fire to name a few. They take these songs and craft them so that they have the band’s signature country style, but also the layers of vocals that make up a cappella music, including beatboxing, deep bass, and tenor melody. Together, these elements give them a unique sound that appeals to country and a cappella fans and highlights their skill as musicians.

Opening for Home Free are two of Calvin’s own ensembles- Women’s Chorale and uKnighted. Women’s Chorale is an all-women honor’s choir directed by Dr. Pearl Shangkuan, and will be performing one song. uKnighted is a new men’s a cappella group put together by students.
