Carlos Hernández is the co-founder and Executive Secretary of the Association for a More Just Society (AJS) in Honduras. AJS is also the national chapter of Transparency International, which is one of the most respected civil society organizations in Honduras. Carlos is also a leader and cofounder of the Alliance for Peace and Justice (APJ) and Let´s Transform Honduras (TH), AJS run civil society coalitions that bring together over 100 non-governmental institutions, universities, churches and social activists to combat corruption and violence.

In the past 8 years he has been active and working directly in several law initiatives in the country to root out corruption in public education sector and security sector to improve justice and transparency. He is currently a member of the Special Commission for the Purging and Transformation of the National Police, which has removed over 4,000 corrupt police officers associated with drug trafficking networks, organized crime and corruption. He has also helped to restructure the police force – hiring more than 5000 new officers and passing new laws to keep corruption out of the security sector.

Because of this cutting-edge work, Carlos has been asked to speak all over the world. In the last 12 months, he has spoken at 23 events in 11 countries. He has been a part of initiatives to analyze and propose change in Latin America and around the world in topics about security, justice and transparency.

Carlos received his bachelor’s degree from the National Autonomous University of Honduras (UNAH) in 1994, and a Project Planning and Evaluation Certificate from the Pontificia Catholic University in Peru in 2007. Before coming to work for AJS, he worked as a community educator, school principal, and a leader in multiple community development programs. He lives in Honduras with his wife, and 2 children – both of whom are currently in the US attending college.
