Professor Bergsma is a Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) as well as a Certified Management Accountant (CMA) who has over 20 years of professional experience in the field of accounting and the broader field of business. He earned a Ph.D. with a specialization in Accounting from Walden University and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Grand Valley State University. He started his full-time teaching career in 2007 and has taught over 300 credit hours of undergraduate and graduate level accounting courses. His areas of specialization are Cost Accounting, Managerial Accounting, and Forensic Accounting/Fraud Examination. As it relates to managerial accounting, Professor Bergsma enjoys teaching his students how to use accounting information to aid complex decision making. As it relates to forensic accounting and fraud examination, he is driven by a desire to help reduce the number of incidences, and losses, related to fraud. He believes that any improvements made to reduce fraud losses will be a betterment to the economy and society. Professor Bergsma previously served on the Boards of the Lansing/Grand Rapids Chapter of the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE) and the Grand Rapids Chapter of the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA).
