When I read the mission statement of Calvin College, I feel challenged and devoted to this mission in a deep and personal way. I think one of the things that God has called me to be is to “be real”, to communicate to others that through our weakness and flaws, we all have value in Christ, and He loves us deeply. I have a passion for helping others to learn that they are created with a value and a purpose, and to live as a treasured, loved child of God. My life has been filled with opportunities to celebrate diversity and to advocate for justice in a number of circumstances and I feel passionate about continuing to live out this calling in my role at the Center for Counseling and Wellness.
I am a mom to 7 kids (step, bio, adopted) and have also been a foster parent, so it has been a while since I have had a hobby. I love spending time with my family – going boating, camping, traveling, or just hanging out.
I am a Licensed Masters Social Worker. I began working at the Center for Counseling and Wellness in 2014. Prior to that, I had a private practice where I saw children, adolescents and adults who were working through any number of issues in their lives. I have experience as both an administrator and a clinician. I have worked in a hospital emergency room, inpatient and partial psychiatric hospital, developed programs for individuals in crisis and with chronic mental health issues, and conducted assessments of mental health facilities throughout the US. I enjoy supervising interns and developing programs. My training and life experiences have allowed me opportunities to work with individuals that are deaf, by using ASL, and also with individuals whose primary language is Spanish.
