On February 8 and 9, 125 students from around the state gathered in DeVos Communication Center for CalvinHacks – Calvin’s first fully fledged hackathon.

This didn’t involve hacking into anyone’s computers, but it did involve developing some fantastic computing projects! From the useful – such as Grocery Tracker and Resume Buffet – to the fun – including Troooon – students worked hard for 24 hours to create a software or hardware project from start to finish. CalvinHacks is the first MLH (Major League Hacking) Member Event hackathon in West Michigan, joining the ranks of hackathons at schools around the world.

The winning project, PlantBit, is described by the Calvin students who created it as “FitBit for your plants.” Theirs was just one of many fantastic projects created by Calvin students, as well as students from GVSU, Oakland University, MSU, and other Michigan schools.
