Love Your Neighbor Covenant

COVID Response / Forms & Resources / Love Your Neighbor Covenant

The Love Your Neighbor covenant is a way you can express your commitment to the safety and well-being of the Calvin community. There are two versions of the covenant below—one for Calvin employees, and another for Calvin students. To access the student version, scroll down the page.

Love Your Neighbor: A Calvin Covenant for Employees

Note: Signing the covenant is included in your online training, which can be accessed here.

Because I am part of the Calvin University community, I promise to do everything I can to ensure a safe and healthy Calvin community and to care for my friends and neighbors by guarding their health as much as my own, just as Jesus Christ calls us to love our neighbors as much as we love ourselves. As Paul writes, when we bear each other’s burdens, we fulfill the law of Christ (Galatians 6:2).

As part of this communal covenant, I promise to protect myself, protect my community, and remain engaged in the mission of Calvin University.

The following is a list of practices that will guide my actions in each of these areas:

Protect Myself

  • Take my temperature twice a day and record it.
  • Wash my hands before and after eating, using the bathroom, and touching door handles or any surfaces outside of my room.
  • Sneeze or cough into my elbow and away from other people.
  • Wear a mask whenever I am outside of my room or office.

Protect Others

  • Maintain appropriate social distancing, especially in classroom settings or the presence of older members of the community.
  • Stay home if I feel ill or after exposure to someone who is ill or has tested positive for COVID-19.
  • Wear an appropriate face mask and other protective gear as directed by the university.
  • Be positive, attentive, and helpful to anyone around who may be in need of support.

Protect My Community

  • Keep my clothing, belongings, personal spaces, and shared common spaces clean.
  • Participate in testing and contact tracing to preserve the wellness of the community.
  • Carefully observe instructional signs and follow directions.
  • Abide by State of Michigan guidelines for re-engagement (e.g., size of gatherings).

Engage the Mission

  • Actively support the learning and living experience of our students however it is delivered (in-person or online).
  • Pray for the health and wellbeing of our community, our city, our nation, and our world.
