Subject: IMPORTANT: Additional Surveillance Testing Launching Next Week!

Dear students,

Congratulations on a successful start to fall semester!  As a co-chair of the COVID Response Team (CRT), I want to thank you for your diligence in adhering to the safety precautions and behavioral expectations we have adopted at Calvin University to keep our community safe.  We would not be where we are today without your active engagement!

As you may know, for the past several weeks, we have engaged Calvin University athletes in random surveillance screening tests so that we can better monitor the prevalence of COVID-19 within our community.  Beginning next week, we plan to expand the pool of students from whom we will randomly select names to be screened. In addition to student athletes, we will launch surveillance screening testing for two new categories of students: those who are engaged in community engagement work as part of a Calvin course (i.e.- internships, practicums, clinicals, student teaching, etc.) and students who live in on-campus housing.  You are receiving this email because you fall into one of these categories.

Starting tomorrow (Friday, October 9), and continuing each Friday, we will randomly select up to 15% of students in each of these categories for surveillance screening testing.  The students selected will be expected to complete a screening test the following week. If you receive notification of your random selection for surveillance testing, you will also be given a link to sign up for a screening test window, using Eventbrite (similar to the sign-up process we used at the beginning of the semester).  Screening testing will happen each Monday and Wednesday; you will be invited to sign up for a specific time that works for you within the available timeslots.

Please note that the selection of people for surveillance testing will be completely random, which means you may be selected more than once or not at all in the coming weeks.  All students whose names are randomly selected will be expected to comply.  If you receive notification of being randomly selected and you have a question or concern, you are invited to reach out to the following email address:   Please note that all notifications to students who are selected for surveillance testing will come from the “COVID Surveillance Testing” email address.  The email notification will include details about the location of surveillance testing as well as other important information regarding the screening test process.

Thank you for your continued partnership and vigilance—it’s working!

In hope,

Sarah Visser, Ph.D.
