It is now August, which means we are just a few weeks away from most of you arriving back on campus. If you are a new or returning student who is living on campus this fall, you should have received detailed information pertaining to your arrival over the past few days. If you are joining the Calvin community as a non-residential student, details related to your arrival will be communicated to you yet this week (including details on how you can sign up for testing).
For now, this communication intends to provide you with a few quick updates since our last official communication on Friday, July 24. During the month of August, you can expect to receive a weekly email from the Safe Return team with important updates.
Frequently Asked Questions
The Safe Return website now includes an updated FAQ (accessible from the Safe Return page’s main navigation bar). We hope that many of your questions will be answered there. We will be updating and adding to this FAQ regularly over the next few weeks. If you have additional questions, please feel free to submit those to our COVID-19 Response Team at ResponseTeam@calvin.edu, and we will try to answer your questions in a timely manner.
For on-campus residents, primary arrival dates have been communicated to most groups, and additional details related to your specific arrival situation, such as how to schedule your specific arrival time were sent via email a few days ago.
We don’t anticipate many, if any, changes to the actual class schedule moving forward, though the location of certain classes may change over the next few weeks. You can monitor your class schedule this summer using Self-Service.
Last week, we started modifying existing classrooms around campus and we are also working on creating new classroom spaces that meet the recommended standards for the COVID-shaped world we live in. We will be adding photos of some of these spaces to our website this week.
Living & Learning on Campus
As we enter the Calvin community, we share a responsibility to do our best to love our neighbor well. Because of this, we have developed some resources that help us care for our friends and neighbors by guarding their health as much as our own, just as Jesus Christ calls us to love our neighbors as much as we love ourselves. Please take 10-15 minutes to watch two short videos and review and sign the Love Your Neighbor Covenant. These simple, but important actions will help us protect the safety and wellbeing of our community.
We recognize that creating community during this time is so important, and it’s a high value here at Calvin. With the health and safety of the community as a high priority, leaders from across campus are coming up with some great ideas and plans for how we can create in-person community in new and creative ways this fall. We will share with you some of the ideas we will be implementing in our next update.
Clarifying your experience
This week, members of our student orientation team are putting together a series of short videos to help provide you with a bit more clarity on what things will look like when we begin our time together this fall. We will begin sharing these with you later this week so you can get a sense for what your classroom, dining, residential, and indoor/outdoor experience will look like as we begin our time together this fall.
We continue to pray for you and your family’s safety and wellbeing, and we are eagerly anticipating your arrival on campus in a few short weeks!
