Neil Carlson
Director
After finishing his doctorate in Political Science at Duke University in 2004, Neil joined CSR as Assistant Director for contract research, becoming Director in 2011. Neil delights in solving problems and boosting performance by linking team culture to technology and automation. His research areas include civic engagement, organizational culture, religion and politics, and science and technology policy. Favorite projects often result in interactive data visualizations posted to CSR's Tableau Public profile. He enjoys sci-fi books and movies and family travel with his wife and two sons.

Laura Luchies
Associate Director
Laura, CSR's Associate Director, earned her Bachelor's degree from Calvin College and her Master's and PhD in Social Psychology from Northwestern University. Laura's academic research focuses on close relationships, especially conflict and forgiveness. After spending three years as a psychology professor, Laura joined CSR in 2014. Laura leads many of CSR's projects, especially projects that involve quantitative statistical analyses. Laura enjoys jumping on the trampoline, playing board games, and taking trips with her husband and two daughters.

Kathy Bardolph
Office Manager
Kathy graduated from Calvin College with a double major in English and German. She joined CSR full time in 2008, first as Administrative Assistant, then as Office Manager in summer 2018. Besides bookkeeping, administrative work, and proofing/editing at CSR, Kathy works independently as a proofreader. Vacations and extra time fill up with following husband Pete’s band, reading, gardening, and travel to San Diego to see her two grandchildren.

Adriene Pendery
Research & Development Manager
Adriene first joined CSR's team as a Research Assistant in June 2016. After earning her Bachelor’s in Psychology from Calvin, she then took on the role of Research Associate and now serves as the Research & Development Manager. Adriene loves a new challenge and delights in implementing web-based systems-integration solutions for clients. In her spare time, Adriene enjoys baking and spending time with family and friends.

Nate Phillips
Business Development Manager
Nate will be joining the immensely talented Center for Social Research team at Calvin University. He brings over 10 years of professional experience that has focused on business development, community engagement, corporate philanthropy, and relationship cultivation. “I am honored to have the opportunity to work alongside the best and brightest individuals that have dedicated their time to reputable research and data analysis for our local businesses. Being a resource to our business community is a passion of mine, and I look forward to bringing an inclusive approach to this work.” In his free time, Nate is a member of the Mayor’s Next Gen Advisory Board, and the Grand Rapids Housing Appeals Board. He and his family enjoy volunteering together in the community and are avid downhill skiers.

Jax Heil
Research Specialist
Jax started as a Research Assistant with CSR in June 2020. After graduating from Calvin with a degree in Social Work, Jax came on staff as a Research Specialist. At CSR, Jax particularly enjoys qualitative research in which he can learn about the stories and experiences of people. Outside of CSR, you can find Jax running, gardening, studying to get his Master of Social Work, or being in community with others.

Yejae Kim
Research Specialist
Yejae Kim is a Research Specialist at the Center for Social Research at Calvin University. He earned a B.A. in International Relations and a B.S. in Data Science and minored in Geography from Calvin University in 2020. Prior to joining CSR, he has been involved in a diversity of research projects with the Center for Democratic Development in Accra, Ghana, New Jersey State Senator Nellie Pou, and with multiple professors at Calvin University. Yejae’s research interests include maritime policies, environmental justice, and racial equity.

Emmajean Spoelman
Research Specialist
Emmajean is a senior studying Psychology and Neuroscience at Calvin. She is hoping to pursue a graduate degree in clinical neuroscience. She is passionate about restorative justice and improving inner-city education. In her free time, Emmajean likes to try new breweries with her friends, listen to true crime podcasts, and sing.

Nicole graduated in May 2020 with a BSW. Nicole joined the CSR team as a research assistant in February 2019, and now serves as the Research Associate, supervising research assistants and providing project support. Nicole enjoys drumming, crime documentaries, going to coffee shops, and cooking new recipes.

Adam Ritsema
Research Assistant
Adam is a senior at Calvin University studying Statistics, Business, and Data Science. After graduation, he is hoping to pursue a graduate degree in business analytics. Adam is particularly interested in the power of data to drive business decisions and create real-world change, especially relating to social justice and sustainability. When not in the office, Adam enjoys trying to keep up with his book-buying addiction, cooking with friends, and obsessively watching tennis.

Alyssa is a junior studying Psychology with a concentration in neuroscience. Starting at CSR in the summer of 2021, she hopes to continue her education to pursue a Masters in Neuroscience. Alyssa is interested in how data may bring to light unheard narratives within a community. Outside of the office, Alyssa enjoys roller skating, watching movies with loved ones, or picking up new hobbies like making earrings.

Andrea started as a research assistant in June 2021! At CSR, she enjoys qualitative research, and finds quantitative research rewarding. As she studies for her Bachelor ’s in Social Work, she is excited to learn from the community around her with the lenses of curiosity and care. Research Assistant
Bobae Grace, a senior studying Computer Science with a Business minor at Calvin University, started at CSR in the summer of 2021! She aspires to pursue a career to integrate and build bridges for social issues and technology. Bobae will be the most people-person computer scientist you will ever meet. Bobae is not your average Korean-Latina. In her free time, you will find her at a coffee shop becoming friends with strangers, exploring the best food places the city has to offer with loved ones, or probably sleeping after a long day of dancing!

Marcus Kamau
Research Assistant
Marcus is a senior double majoring in Economics and International Relations. Born in Kenya, Marcus has a passion to change policies that negatively affect people who are overlooked in society today. His passions include entertaining friends, art and music. Marcus is also a Resident Assistant at the Timmer dorm and was the Chief Development Officer at Calvin Startups, an entrepreneurship student organization at Calvin University during the 2019-2020 school year.
