  • H. Henry Meeter Center for Calvin Studies

The Meeter Center 2020 Spring Lecture will feature Dr. Jeff Fisher, Associate Professor of Theological Studies and Academic Dean at Kuyper University.

Johannes Oecolampadius (1482–1531) was the leading reformer in the Swiss city of Basel. This presentation engages particularly with his 1534 commentary on Hebrews, providing great insight into his views on the covenant, which departed significantly from the medieval tradition and became foundational for the development of a Reformed idea of the covenant. By comparing his comments on the relevant passages with medieval predecessors and contemporary reformers, we will see the similarities and differences between Oecolampadius, Bullinger, Zwingli, and Calvin. As a result, we can identify many ways in which his articulation of the covenant was taken up by Calvin and later reformers.
