David Crump and his most recent book: I Pledge Allegiance

Abraham Kuyper's understanding of the kingdom of God was crucial to his social and political views. But did he get it right?

No, according to guest lecturer David Crump. Crump argues that Kuyper failed to let the teachings of Jesus correct his misconceptions -- a failure that springs from his theological education in classic Protestant Liberalism. As a result, Kuyper has become an unwitting bedfellow with the most narrow-minded representatives of today's Religious Right. Join us for a provocative discussion about one of Calvin College's most important intellectual influences.

As part of the event, Branson Parler, Professor of Theological Studies at Kuyper College will discuss the lecture with Prof. Crump in an interview context, followed by questions from the audience.

David Crump is a retired professor of religion from Calvin College, where he taught from 1997 through 2015. Prior to that time, he was a pastor in several churches, as well as a New Testament instructor at the Utah Institute for Biblical Studies (now Salt Lake Seminary). Crump received his Ph.D. from the University of Aberdeen in Scotland, his M.Div. from Regent College in British Columbia, and his B.S. from the University of Montana. He is the author of An Introduction to the Gospels and Acts (with Charles Puskas Jr.), Encountering Jesus, Encountering Scripture, and most recently, I Pledge Allegiance: A Believer's Guide to Kingdom Citizenship in 21st Century America.

The event is co-sponsored by the Henry Institute at Calvin College and the Calvin College Religion Department.
