Inland lakes are key elements of both global freshwater ecosystems and the global carbon cycle as lakes provide habitat for fish and wildlife and are an important source of primary production that form the basis for food webs. Broad-scale, process-based models are needed to allow scientists to provide informed opinions on whether lakes are likely to accelerate or mitigate climate change, contribute to increased or decreased primary productivity, or alter water quality in the coming decades. This presentation will show results from a regional-scale case study, where we use an integrated modeling framework of lake hydrology and biogeochemistry to project changes in lake-specific and regional primary productivity and C fluxes under 21st century climate change simulations for thousands of lakes in Northern Wisconsin and Michigan.
