Paul Steen, PhD., Aquatic Ecologist, Huron River Watershed Council

The Huron River Watershed Council (HRWC), based out of Ann Arbor, Michigan, stands in an unusual position in the environmental field. As a non-profit, HRWC lacks regulatory power to enforce environmental rules, but occupies a unique position as an interface between local and State government and the general public. Paul Steen, aquatic ecologist, will review the recent work of Michigan’s oldest watershed-based organization on engaging the public through macroinvertebrate and water chemistry studies, working with local governments on banning toxic substances and mitigating climate change impacts, and expanding water-based recreational and economic opportunities.
