In association with "Mars: Astronomy and Culture" at the Center Art Gallery
“Mars: Astronomy and Culture” brings together photographs, drawings, posters, book covers, and video projections, connecting recent scientific images of Mars to the entire history of documentation and photography of the planet. This exhibition points to the impact of Mars on popular culture even before the 20th century.
Join on Wednesday, October 3, at 3:30 to hear from Jonathan Manni, 2017 Calvin Engineering alum, and current Ph.D student in Aerospace Engineering at the University of Colorado Boulder. Jonathan will share on his internship at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, where he spent his summer working on a prototype star tracking tool for astronauts to use on missions to the moon in case of spacecraft system failure. The testing of such technologies is crucial for safe missions to Moon, and Moon missions provide a testbed for future human missions to Mars.
A celebratory exhibition reception will follow the lecture. All are welcome, refreshments served. A screening of The Martian will follow in the Fine Arts Center Auditorium at 7 p.m.
“Mars: Astronomy and Culture” is presented by The Calvin Center Art Gallery in partnership with the Holland Museum and the GVSU Art Gallery. This is event is co-sponsored by the Calvin College department of Engineering, and the Physics and Astronomy department.
