Dr. Nate Strong will deliver a lecture about his research in environmental intervention to combat the Ascaris intestinal worm and its harmful effects.

The intestinal worm Ascaris infects approximately 15% of the global population and is associated with impaired cognitive development and stunted growth in children. Traditional control of Ascaris has depended on deworming programs, but high re-infection rates limit its effectiveness. Effective disease reduction depends on also considering the environmental component of the disease where infection happens. However, limitations of current egg monitoring assays hinder the ability for environmental intervention. This lecture includes a description of the three ways we tackled the challenges of egg monitoring assays.

Dr. Nate Strong is a Calvin Alumnus with a Ph.D. from Standford University who has conducted research with the department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.
