Asian Studies invites the Calvin community to join us for a special lecture by Dr. Anding Shen, entitled, “Between the East and the West - Cultural Differences in Responses to COVID."

“Why are they so crazy as to let so many people get sick and die?”

“Why are they so crazy as to lock the whole town down for just a few cases?”

Elimination or co-existence, which one is right?  These are some of the different perspectives on COVID responses.  This talk explores the underlining hopes and fears of the people living in different cultures as they face the COVID pandemic and invites a dialogue between the east and the west.

Dr. Anding Shen is a Professor of Biology at Calvin University. Anding obtained her PhD from Johns Hopkins University, where she focused on immunology and virology.  She teaches immunology, cell biology, microbiology and an off-campus course on Chinese Medicine and Culture.  Anding grew up in Shanghai China, where her family still lives.
