Christ still beyond his Flesh, A Meeter Center Presentation

  • Thursday, July 13, 2017

  • Meeter Center

Join us for a Meeter Center Visiting Fellow Presentation with K. J. Drake, Ph.D. Student at St. Louis University, for a discussion of 16th-Century Reformed scholastic theological developments in views of Christ's finite and infinite nature.

Christ still beyond his Flesh - the extra Calvinisticum, Antoine de la Roche Chandieu, and Early Reformed Orthodoxy.

That Christ is both fully incarnate in his human nature and simultaneously beyond the human body as the eternal Word of the Father, the so-called extra Calvinisticum, has been a point of contention since the Reformation and yet is poorly understood. Through a theological analysis of French, Reformed theologian Antoine de la Roche Chandieu's De Veritate Humanae, I will demonstrate how the shift to a scholastic theological method both exhibits continuity and development of the articulation and theological rationale for the extra as presented in the first and second generation of the Reformed tradition. This work will contribute to a larger project discussing the development of this doctrine among Reformed theologians of the 16th century.
