The International Role of an Attorney in Intellectual Property and Patents

  • Friday, March 29, 2019
  • 12:30 PM–1:30 PM

Ever wondered how attorneys make decisions about whether to practice in a specialized area of the law? How a specific degree might influence what you decide to practice in? Whether there is a future for an engineer (or mathematician, or social worker, or musician) in the field of law?

Join Nathan Sportel (2007 Calvin graduate with a degree in Electrical Engineering and a law degree from Michigan State University) for an informal lunch on Friday, March 29 from 12:30 to 1:30. Nathan is a partner at the Chicago law firm of Hursch Blackwell, whose practice touches on all areas of intellectual property law, including patent prosecution, patent litigation, and transactional IP matters, domestically and internationally. Nathan was a former Patent Examiner with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, and has worked with a wide range of technologies including artificial intelligence, embedded circuits, cellular technology and telecommunications, mobile applications, plastics recycling, medical devices, solar technology, and cloud-based innovation, as well as other areas. He has counseled clients internationally and has experience prosecuting domestic trademarks. In addition to working with patents, Nathan supports and assists in intellectual property litigation matters for the firm’s clients.

Come for free food and good conversation with Nathan – but you must RSVP since there is limited seating available for this event. Email Ellen Hekman at elh4@calvin.edu to reserve a place and include your cell phone number with the email.
