A combined Career/Pre-Law breakfast event will feature Elizabeth Shackelford.
Shackelford earned her Bachelors degree in History from Duke University, and her Doctor of Law – JD in International Law and Legal Studies from the University of Pittsburgh. She worked as a Career Diplomat with the U.S. Department of State until 2017 when she resigned in protest of the Trump administration, due to concerns about the declining state of diplomacy under the President. During her diplomatic career, she served in Somalia, Kenya, South Sudan, Poland, and Washington D.C. For her work in South Sudan during the outbreak of the civil war in 2013, Shackelford received the Barbara Watson Award for Consular Excellence, the State Department’s highest honor for consular work.
Shackelford is now a Senior Fellow on U.S. Foreign Policy at the Chicago Council on Global Affairs. Her most recent book, The Dissent Channel: American Diplomacy in a Dishonest Age demonstrates that the crisis in US foreign policy predated recent efforts to sideline the diplomatic corps. Her analysis, writing, and outreach focus on bringing awareness to limit the use of military force to the defense of core U.S. national security interests and favors robust diplomatic engagement.
