In January 2023, Trent Figg was hired as the first head coach in Calvin University football history. Figg comes to Calvin from the University of Oregon, where he served as the football program's senior offensive analyst under head coach Dan Lanning, who was the defensive coordinator of the 2021 University of Georgia national championship football team.

The selection of Figg follows a national search that commenced in November 2022. A press conference to introduce Figg to the Calvin and West Michigan communities is scheduled for 3 p.m. EST on Wednesday, January 18, 2023. The press conference will happen in Calvin's Van Noord Arena and will also be livestreamed.

Who is the head coach?
Trent Figg was hired as Calvin University's first head football coach in early January 2023. Additional coaching staff will be hired during spring 2023.

What additional staff will be hired to support the football program?
Additional coordinators, assistant coaches, and support staff will be hired in the near future.

When will recruitment start for the inaugural football team?
Prospective students can apply to Calvin and indicate on their application an interest in football and/or email Houston Glass and indicate an interest in being recruited for football. An informational meeting for current students interested in football was held in December 2022. Note: Current students can also contact Houston Glass to express interest.

What league will Calvin compete in?
This will be announced in January 2023.

When will the first varsity game happen?
The first varsity game will take place in either August or September 2024.

What facilities will be built to support the football program?
The athletics strategic plan calls for significant upgrades and additions to the outdoor fields at Calvin. This will include a new football stadium.

Where will the stadium be located?
The new football stadium will be located on the Northwest corner of campus. For context, the stadium will be constructed just to the north of the current soccer field and the field will run north-south.

When will the stadium be completed?
Construction related to the athletics strategic plan’s upgrade of outdoor facilities has begun and will be completed in phases between now and 2025. The stadium is included among the priorities of the plan.

Who served on the head football coach search committee?
The search committee is co-chaired by Noah Toly, provost, and Jim Timmer, director of athletics. The committee also includes the following members: Brian Bolt, dean of education and men’s head golf coach; Crystal Bruxvoort, professor of chemistry and faculty athletics representative; Andy George, associate vice president for human resources; Becky Hilgert, women’s head softball coach and assistant athletics director for compliance; Mike LeFebre, director of major giving; Michelle Loyd-Paige, executive associate to the president for diversity and inclusion; Melissa Rousseau, director of undergraduate admissions; Bill Sall, men’s head basketball coach; Ryan Souders, men’s head soccer coach, Sarah Visser, executive vice president for student experience and strategy; and Amber Warners, women’s volleyball head coach and associate athletics director.
