From Wednesday, July 18 through Friday, July 20, Calvin College's Center for Innovation in Business will host the Calvin Young Women's Business Institute.
The inaugural three-day event is designed specifically for business-minded women who are entering their senior year of high school during the 2012-2013 academic year. Participants will learn about business from professionals while discovering and developing their own strengths.
The weekend includes networking opportunities with fellow participants, professors and west Michigan business leaders; learning business protocol and practice; working with the Calvin College Career Development team to identify and develop personal strengths; and learning and applying the globally-used "human-centered design" process--an innovative way to solve problems.
"The Calvin Young Women's Business Institute gives high potential young women the chance to work and learn about business alongside some of the areas best and brightest from great companies like Wolverine Worldwide, Amway and Steelcase in an exciting pre-college program," said Bob Eames, director of Calvin's Center for Innovation in Business.
Eames says that the participants will have the opportunity to learn from several women who have risen to the senior management ranks including Mary Tuuk, president of Fifth Third Bank West Michigan. And they'll also learn from entrepreneurs like Kelly LeCoy '11, who opened "Uptown Kitchen" in Grand Rapids this past Spring--less than a year after graduating from Calvin College.
"This program will offer young women the chance to explore new opportunities, to make new friends and to develop a network in the business world," said Eames.
Applications for the program are due Friday, June 1. For more information on the application process, visit www.calvin.edu/innovation/womensinstitute
The program is funded completely by generous donations from corporate and private partners. Students only need to cover their personal expenses and the cost of transportation to and from Calvin College.
