On Tuesday, April 10, Calvin College will host the 3rd annual west Michigan
regional business plan competition. Winners of local college/university
business plan competitions from Calvin, Aquinas, Hope, Grand Valley State,
Cornerstone and Davenport will compete for a purse of $5,750.
Calvin College grad Kelly LeCoy, the winner of last year’s Regional Business
Plan Competition, went on to win Grand Rapids 5x5 Competition and just recently
opened Uptown Kitchen, the business plan she first-pitched a little more than a
year ago.
“Kelly LeCoy’s story shows us that this is more than just a contest for
students to win a few bucks,” said Bob Eames, professor of business at Calvin
College. “We hope these competitions will encourage entrepreneurship and
innovation and hopefully spawn new businesses.”
The competition will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. at Calvin’s Covenant Fine
Arts Center Recital Hall. The competition is free and open to the public.
“This is a great opportunity for the community to see some of the area's
best and brightest student entrepreneurs sharing their plans in a competitive
setting," said Eames. "We'll also be featuring the stories of past competitors
who are now creating jobs with the businesses they planned as students. So come
and see if the next Bill Gates, Howard Schultz or Debbi Fields will come from
West Michigan."
